NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former president Donald Trump went along with Fox News host Greg Gutfeld's joke about him trying to take out the gunman, who attempted to assassinate him over the weekend, with his golf club, during his appearance on Wednesday, September 18 episode of 'Gutfeld'.

The Secret Service discovered a man armed with a scoped assault rifle outside the fence of the Trump International Golf Club in Florida on Sunday afternoon, while the GOP nominee was playing on the grounds. Later identified as Ryan Routh, he was immediately engaged and subsequently arrested while trying to make his escape.

The incident is reportedly being considered as a second attempt on Trump's life, following the shooting at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania back in July. At the time, a bullet fired by 20-year-old Thomas Crooks managed to graze Trump's right ear, before federal agents covered him and took out the shooter.

Donald Trump's comments on 'Gutfeld'

Appearing on the late-night talk show, Donald Trump quipped how dangerous playing golf was following the weekend's incident, and wagered he would have taken on the wannabe shooter if he knew that the latter was lying in wait.

“Well Mr. P, how’s your golf game?” Gutfeld asked Trump, following the conservative network's norm of addressing him as the President.

“Well, I haven’t been thinking about it too much lately. I always said golf is a very dangerous game," replied Trump in jest, leading the host to add, "Especially if they’re playing with you."

Gutfeld went on to ask, "If they had told you that the shooter was there would you have tried to take him out with your 3 wood?”

"I think so," answered Trump. "I think so, if I knew."

The former president went on to praise the federal agents for their role in mitigating the situation, stating, "Actually, the Secret Service did a great job. They saw the barrel of a gun – big gun – and it came out through bushes. And how many people would see that?”

“He really was exceptional to have done it,” he added specifically of the agent who first spotted Routh.
