WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump welcomed a group of Purple Heart recipients to the White House on Thursday, August 7, paying tribute to service members who have been wounded or killed in combat.

The Purple Heart, one of the most revered US military honors, was awarded to veterans recognized by name during the ceremony.

Trump highlighted several personal gestures from attendees, noting that Thomas, one of the veterans present, had mailed him his Purple Heart after an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, last year. He also thanked three-time recipient John Ford and Gerald Enter Jr for what he described as “unbelievable kindness.”

While acknowledging the veterans’ sacrifices, Trump drew surprise with a personal comparison. “I guess in a certain way, it wasn’t that easy for me either when you think of it,” he told the audience, adding quickly, “But you went through a lot more than I did. And I appreciate it all very much.”

The remark has since gone viral, with many online mocking him for comparing his bullet wound to those wounded in active combat.

Thursday’s gathering was not the first time Purple Hearts had been presented to Trump.

In a 2023 North Carolina town hall, a veteran handed the president an envelope, saying he “couldn’t think of anybody more deserving.” Another veteran gave him the medal in 2016, before his first election victory.

“I felt he took it in the manner in which I gave it,” the veteran said at the time.

President Donald Trump is facing a wave of outrage after making a comment during a Purple Heart ceremony that many saw as self-centered and disrespectful to wounded veterans.

Social media users erupted with condemnation, accusing Trump of turning an event meant to honor heroes into a moment about his own perceived hardships.

“So nice of Donald Trump to take a minute to honor himself during a ceremony for Purple Heart Recipients,” one commenter wrote.

“Jesus Christ, he makes everything about him. The narcissism is unreal!” another posted.

Others noted the insensitivity of comparing his own experiences to the severe injuries many recipients sustained.

“This is beyond shameful. How dare he minimize what real vets have gone through and compare it to him getting a scratch,” one user said.

Several pointed out that many Purple Heart recipients never recovered from their wounds. “This is literally an obscenity. Many of the men and women who received Purple Hearts eventually died from their injuries,” one user wrote.

Another added, “Oh! What a disservice to men and women who actually served.”

One viral comment read, “How does Trump turn recognizing Purple Heart recipients and the sacrifice they made into something about him? UNBELIEVABLE! Yes, please go on about how hard it was, Donny, for you to ‘earn’ your purple heart. LOSER. POSER. NARCISSIST.”
