WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump warned that economic policies promoted by New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani would ultimately lead to "death, destruction and squalor," arguing that promises of free housing, rent relief and expanded government benefits are unsustainable and drive wealthy taxpayers out of cities.

Trump made the remarks while discussing Mamdani's proposals, mocking what he described as unrealistic promises of "free everything" and suggesting that such policies eventually collapse under their own weight.

Speaking about Mamdani's economic agenda, Trump said policies centered on free rent, free housing and expanded subsidies may sound appealing but would eventually create serious economic problems.

"Free rent, free houses, free everything! But eventually, that ends — leads to death, destruction and squalor, 100% of the time," Trump said.

The president also used sarcasm to illustrate his point, saying he could campaign on eliminating rent and mortgage payments while providing groceries and other benefits at no cost.

"I would be better than him if I went that route. No more rent, mortgage, I'll cut everything, food, I'll give you groceries! You'll have the greatest life ever, follow me!" Trump said.

Trump argued that government promises without a sustainable funding base would ultimately fail and place additional burdens on taxpayers.

The president also asked why Mr Mamdani would support policies that he said might encourage high-income residents and business owners to leave New York.

"Mamdani is a smart person, and I’m surprised he wouldn’t understand that it’s a bad idea to support proposals that could alienate a lot of the people who pay a lot of tax revenue," Trump said. "[Mamdani] has been in the office, a nice person, but he's smart, I don't know why he wants all these people worth hundreds of millions of dollars to leave."

According to Trump, losing wealthy residents would weaken the tax base needed to support city services and government programs. He warned that cities pursuing similar policies risk economic decline if major taxpayers relocate elsewhere.

On Mayor Mamdani in NYC, he also said, “I don't understand why he thinks it's OK for all these companies that pay hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes a year to leave, because you're not going to have any tax base.”

The comments come as Trump increasingly cites Mamdani and other progressive Democrats as examples of an economic vision he opposes.

Republicans have often dismissed such proposals as rent freezes, expanded public housing programs, and broader government subsidies as disincentives to investment and economic growth.
