Trump secures ‘much better deal’ as Gordie Howe International Bridge opens July 27
DETROIT, MICHIGAN: President Donald Trump announced that the United States and Canada reached a revised agreement allowing the Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, to open as scheduled on July 27.
Trump said he negotiated a "much better deal" for the United States before approving the revised terms, claiming the original arrangement was "unacceptable" and needed changes before the long-awaited cross-border bridge could begin operations.
Trump says revised bridge agreement is 'great, and fair'
In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced the agreement and wrote, "I was able to cut a MUCH BETTER DEAL for America, and by so doing, will be allowing the new and spectacular Gordie Howe International Bridge, spanning Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, to open on July 27th, as scheduled."

He added, "The original deal made was unacceptable to me," while describing the revised agreement as "great, and fair."
Trump also thanked Canada for working through the negotiations, writing, "Thank you and congratulations to the Canadian Government. May we both have many years of success with this wonderful new development!"
The president did not provide specific details about the changes made to the original agreement or explain how the revised terms differed. His announcement came as officials from both countries confirmed the bridge remained on schedule to welcome its first travelers later this month.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is set to become a major addition to the US-Canada transportation network, creating a new connection between Detroit and Windsor as officials look to improve cross-border movement.
The six-lane bridge will link Interstate 75 in Detroit with Highway 401 in Windsor, providing another route for commuters, travelers, and commercial traffic between the two countries.
Officials have said the project is expected to increase capacity along one of North America's busiest trade corridors while supporting economic growth and reducing congestion at existing border crossings.
The new bridge will not replace the Ambassador Bridge, which currently handles a significant share of US-Canada trade. Instead, it will operate alongside the existing crossing and provide additional capacity for cross-border traffic.
Trump framed the revised agreement as an example of securing better terms for the United States while maintaining cooperation with one of its largest trading partners.
The announcement also comes as Trump's administration has focused on renegotiating agreements it believes better protect American interests while continuing key economic partnerships.
With the revised agreement now in place, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is expected to open on schedule, marking the completion of one of the largest infrastructure projects connecting the United States and Canada.
