WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump is demanding that Senate Republicans eliminate the filibuster to bypass Democratic opposition and end the ongoing partial government shutdown

President Trump characterized GOP members resisting this shift as "weak" while calling for the immediate invocation of the "Nuclear Option" to secure his legislative agenda.

Trump demands GOP senators ‘be exposed’

President Trump took to ‘Truth Social’ on Saturday, March 28 and made it clear that he expects support from his party in the effort to change Senate rules.

He focused his message on members of his own party who have been hesitant to change the long-standing rules, stating, “It is time for the Senate Filibuster to END. Those weak and ineffective Republicans Senators that stand in the way of this should be exposed to the public. The Democrats are CRAZY!”

Trump has been frustrated by Democrats’ refusal to end the month-long shutdown over their demands for reforms within the Department of Homeland Security and ICE.

He said that ending the 60-vote threshold would allow the GOP to immediately pass the SAVE America Act and fund the government with a simple majority.

Trump asks Republican to play ‘Trump Card’

It may be noted that President Trump has complained about the filibuster since his first term, viewing it as a tool for obstruction rather than a way to encourage compromise.

On Thursday night, he urged his party to take the ultimate procedural leap to regain control of the floor. “It is now time for the Republicans to play their ‘TRUMP CARD,’ and go for what is called the Nuclear Option — Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!” Trump wrote.

While this move would grant Republicans immediate power, most GOP senators have resisted, fearing that losing the rule would leave them defenseless if they return to the minority.

Standoff persists amid House Easter recess

The standoff shows no signs of ending soon, especially after Trump rejected a bipartisan plan from Senators John Kennedy and Ted Cruz that would have reportedly restored funding to TSA agents.

The President preferred to kill the deal because it required a compromise with the opposition.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer remains firm, stating that Democrats “will not give a blank check to Trump’s lawless and deadly immigration militia without reforms.”

With the House now on a two-week Easter holiday, any further discussions are on hold until at least the week of April 13.
