WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald J Trump has launched a fierce rhetorical offensive against congressional Democrats, accusing them of holding national security hostage while quietly acknowledging that his search is actively underway for a permanent Director of National Intelligence (DNI).

In a sweeping statement published on Truth Social, the president effectively validated widespread bipartisan concerns regarding his controversial appointment of housing regulator Bill Pulte by confirming that the administration is explicitly seeking a replacement candidate with established national security experience.

The high-level tactical retreat lands as Congress races against a looming Friday deadline to prevent a total lapse of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

The administration had previously remained defiant over the appointment, despite fierce warnings from both parties that elevating an official with zero intelligence background would derail crucial bipartisan surveillance legislation.

By explicitly pivoting toward a temporary short-term extension framework, the White House implicitly exposed the severe political liabilities generated by the original appointment.

Administration orders sweeping staff downsizings

Despite moving to defuse the confirmation gridlock, Trump confirmed that Pulte will still assume the acting director position on June 19.

The president revealed that he has formally instructed the incoming administrator to execute an immediate, aggressive reduction of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) apparatus, systematically reverting specialized personnel to their respective home agencies.

This dramatic administrative restructuring aims to systematically dismantle what the administration views as bureaucratic overreach within the central oversight complex.

However, opposition lawmakers have quickly seized on the planned staff reductions, labeling the directive a deliberate attempt to compromise institutional stability during a period of intense global volatility.

Surveillance tools tied to global tournaments

Trump heavily reinforced the operational necessity of Section 702, warning that letting the program expire would directly threaten public safety during upcoming high-profile national events.

The president explicitly tied the surveillance framework's survival to the protection of the upcoming FIFA World Cup matches and the historic America250 bicentennial celebrations scheduled across the country.

The sudden shift to damage control highlights the immense leverage congressional critics maintained over the executive branch's intelligence appointments.

While House Speaker Mike Johnson continues to work closely with the administration to broker an emergency legislative bridge, the executive branch's formal request for a short-term extension proves that the political cost of maintaining Pulte as a long-term chief had become entirely unsustainable.
