WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump’s massive July 4 fireworks spectacle has officially entered the record books. Nearly two months after Trump promised the “largest fireworks show in history,” Guinness World Records has now confirmed that the celebration set a new global record.

The 40-minute display, held on July 4, 2026, featured 840,537 fireworks across Washington, DC, as America marked its 250th anniversary.

Guinness World Records confirmed that the record-breaking display was achieved by Freedom 250 and Pyrotecnico, with Event Strategies organizing the event in Washington, DC.

“The largest firework display consists of 840,537 fireworks,” Guinness stated in its record entry, officially putting Trump’s much-hyped celebration in the history books.

The number was enough to beat the previous record of 810,904 fireworks, which was set during a megachurch’s New Year's Eve celebration in 2016.

The scale of the Washington display had been a major part of the planning from the beginning. Instead of relying on a single launch point, organizers spread the fireworks across several locations.

Donald Trump’s ‘Salute to America’ faced weather delays

The record-breaking show did not go ahead without a few problems. Weather delays forced travellers to be evacuated from the National Mall before the fireworks finally got underway.

Despite the disruption, hundreds of thousands of people remained in Washington, DC, for the celebration.

Trump also delivered an abbreviated speech before the fireworks as part of the “Salute to America” event, which was organized around the country’s 250th birthday.

Once the display finally began, it continued for around 40 minutes, filling the sky over the National Mall and the Potomac River.

Doug Burgum explained the massive fireworks scale

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum had already hinted at the unusual scale of the celebration in June.

“Normally the fireworks are set off right along here,” Burgum said while referring to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

“This year, because of the size and scale of the thing, there are so many locations where the fireworks are going to be going off, including barges,” he explained.

The White House had launched Freedom 250 as a public-private partnership months earlier, with Trump serving as chair of the initiative.

The use of multiple launch sites, including barges along the Potomac River, allowed organizers to spread the huge display across the capital.

Freedom 250 calls record a symbol of America’s 250th birthday

Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez celebrated the Guinness confirmation, describing the display as a major moment for the country's anniversary.

“On July 4th, America came together to celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday with the largest fireworks display in history,” Alvarez said in a statement.

She added that the display was a “powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and pride” as the country begins its next 250 years.

The White House also praised the spectacle, saying no other president could have accomplished what Trump did during the historic celebration.
