Trump's attorney corrects himself after saying Clarence Thomas 'directed' him in election subversion case
WASHINGTON, DC: In a major gaffe, Donald Trump’s defense attorney said Justice Clarence Thomas had “directed” him to question special counsel Jack Smith’s authority.
However, John Lauro quickly corrected himself during the hearing on Thursday, September 5, in the election subversion case.
Donald Trump's defense attorney cites Judge Clarence Thomas note
The attorney was addressing the new indictment brought by Jack Smith against Donald Trump days after the Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity. He argued that the case should be dismissed, referencing Thomas' note on that ruling.
"The lower courts should thus answer these essential questions concerning the special counsel's appointment before proceeding. If this unprecedented prosecution [of Trump] is to proceed, it must be conducted by someone duly authorized to do so by the American people," Thomas wrote in his solo concurring opinion.
The case was quashed by Judge Aileen Cannon who presided over the classified documents case against Trump, according to Newsweek.
Lauro emphasized the court should take the same example as Cannon at the hearing on Thursday, September 5, and said that the court must decide on the issue of the special counsel's authority "in light of Justice Thomas' interest" in it.
Internet trolls Justice Clarence Thomas over Donald Trump’s defense attorney statement
Netizens quickly reacted to attorney John Lauro's mistake during the hearing and poked fun at Clarence Thomas. Many called for in-depth investigation in Justice's involvement in the related cases.
One user said on X, "Clarence and Ginni Thomas are compromised and corrupt. They ooze corruption and are eroding our Democracy. They must be held accountable."
"While is MAGA GOP filled with liars and rule breakers and how do they keep getting away with all these rule breaking? Why do I feel like Clarence Thomas will also get away with this?" another slammed.
A person trolled, "Crooked Clarence must go. He's giving corruption a bad name."
"WTF??? We need a full-throated investigation into everything, especially in light of the Tenet puppeteering," one user demanded.
"Well, he certainly drew a map for them from the bench. Given the opinion, I’m sure there was no need for a follow up email from Ginny," a person speculated.
Another expressed, "Impeach him, and it's time to prosecute the orange Felon for election interference."
