Trump's latest map stretches far beyond Greenland across North America

WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump posted a map on Truth Social on Monday, September 7, that depicts essentially the entire North American continent as part of the United States.

The image includes Mexico, Canada, Greenland, and Cuba, extending Trump’s geographic messaging beyond earlier posts.

The map followed a Sunday post in which Trump altered “New Mexico” to “New America.”

Trump's map expands his geographic messaging

Trump’s Monday map makes the latest geographic post broader than his Sunday image involving New Mexico, which crossed out “Mexico” and replaced it with “New America.”

The map claims the entire continent as the USA, including Mexico, Canada, Greenland, and Cuba. It does not provide an explanation from Trump for the Monday image.

In total, North America comprises of 23 independent countries (including 13 Caribbean island nations) and 22 dependent territories in the Caribbean, as per the UN. As of September 5, 2026, North America has a population of 619,665,220, making it the fourth most populous continent in the world after Asia, Africa, and Europe.

The Monday post also came after Trump’s push involving geographic names.

On August 27, he announced from the Oval Office that he had officially filed paperwork to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”

The lake sits on the border between the United States and Canada and shares its name with the Canadian province of Ontario.

Trump’s Sunday New Mexico post similarly offered no formal announcement.

The state joined the Union in 1912, but it remained unclear whether Trump had any concrete plans to rename it.

Minutes after the New Mexico post, Trump shared a geographic message: a picture of the moon emblazoned with the words: “The moon is ours.”

Greenland remains a separate dispute

Trump’s territorial messaging includes Greenland, the autonomous Danish territory he has sought to control.

Earlier this year, Trump said Washington needed Greenland for national security reasons and considered tariffs against countries that did not support his effort to acquire it.

“I may put a tariff on countries if they don't go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security,” Trump said at a White House event earlier this year.

European officials have objected to Trump’s repeated messaging about taking over Greenland, either by buying the territory or using military force.

On Monday, EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen said only Denmark and Greenland should decide the territory’s future after a two-day visit to Nuuk.

“Greenland's future is for the people of Greenland and Denmark to decide, no one else,” von der Leyen said at a press conference alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic counterpart Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

She also said, “Territorial integrity, sovereignty, the inviolability of borders, these are fundamental principles of international law.”

EU announces new Greenland investment package

Von der Leyen announced an EU-Greenland partnership package focused on connectivity, clean energy, and critical raw materials.

“This is 200 million euros of new investments for Greenland for this year and the next,” she said.

The package comes on top of a doubling of direct EU aid to Greenland and is intended to support concrete projects, including improved satellite capabilities for better internet access in northern and eastern parts of the island.

After meetings with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House earlier this year, officials from Greenland and Denmark said “fundamental disagreements” remained with the Trump administration.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said, “It's clear that the president has this wish of conquering Greenland,” and called that outcome “totally unacceptable.”

French President Emmanuel Macron had also said French troops were in Greenland for military exercises with Danish and other NATO forces, including Germany, Norway, and Sweden.
