Van Jones says Kamala Harris' media absence 'can't last', urges her to be 'as available as possible'
WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President Kamala Harris' absence from the media "can't last," according to CNN's Van Jones, who also stated that she must be accessible to the media.
"I’m not mad that she’s not doing 15 interviews a day," he remarked pointing out that Harris had only been leading the Democratic field for roughly two weeks before formally announcing her candidacy on Friday, August 2. "But it can’t last. It’s very important. And we can’t make favorites. Anybody running for the top office needs to be as available as possible," reported Fox News.
Kamala Harris has not granted any interviews with the press
In the approximately two weeks since taking the top spot, Kamala Harris has not participated in any news conferences or conducted interviews with the media. Scott Jennings, a CNN political commentator, also suggested Donald Trump and Harris should get some debates scheduled.
"She‘s not sat down with any journalist, that I know of. She’s been pretty good in front of a teleprompter, but she refuses to come and answer questions about her time as vice president, her record when she ran for president, her record in the Senate and what she was the most liberal U.S. senator but at some point, she’s going to have to answer some questions and it may be that the debate stage is the only place Donald Trump can get that done," Jennings said.
Kamala Harris briefly addressed reporters at Joint Base Andrew
Kamala Harris spoke briefly to the media at Joint Base Andrews while she and Joe Biden received Americans released from Russia in a large prisoner swap, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich.
JD Vance forces media to question Kamala Harris
Donald Trump's running mate, JD Vance, criticized the media on Tuesday, claiming that they should make Kamala Harris respond to inquiries.
"I think you guys have got to do a better job at actually forcing Kamala Harris to answer questions. This is a person who has been a presumptive Democrat nominee for 16 days. She hasn’t taken a single real question from a reporter," he said.
"The American people deserve to get to know the people who want to lead them, and I think it’s shameful for Kamala Harris, but increasingly for the media, that she is taking a basement strategy of running from reporters instead of getting in front of them and answering tough questions about her record and letting the American people know who she is," Vance added.
Following the votes of most of the committed delegates to the Democratic Party's upcoming national convention, the DNC said on Friday that Harris has formally secured the 2024 presidential nomination. She also announced on Tuesday that Governor Tim Walz (D-Minn) would be her vice presidential running mate.
Internet says Kamala Harris' lack of interviews reflects she's following Joe Biden's media strategy
Netizens seemed to concur with Van Jones' remarks regarding Kamala Harris' lack of media appearances, as many seem to believe that the newly nominated Democratic presidential candidate is adopting Joe Biden's media strategy.
One X user said, "She gets destroyed of script.. She's just doing a basement biden strat, like in 2020."
Another wrote, "Yes, of course it will last, it’s the Biden basement way."
"Sure it can. It's literally how Joe got elected and served as 'POTUS' for 3.5 years," remarked one.
Someone else said, "Why? Worked for Sleepy Joe. And when he did speak, he made no sense. America has really lowered the bar....."
