JD Vance shuts down rivalry talk, calls Rubio his ‘best friend in the administration’
WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President JD Vance dismissed talk of a political rivalry with Secretary of State Marco Rubio during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, saying speculation about friction between the two top names in the administration had been blown out of proportion.
Both men are frequently floated as leading contenders for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, a storyline that has fueled ongoing chatter about possible tension. Vance said the narrative is far ahead of where things actually stand and insisted their working relationship is solid.

JD Vance dismisses rivalry talk, cites friendship with Marco Rubio
When Hannity brought up the idea that Rubio and Vance were viewed as budding rivals inside the administration, the vice president shut it down immediately. “I don’t feel like that at all,” Vance said, noting that their collaboration within President Donald Trump’s Cabinet has been consistent and productive.
He added that conversations about 2028 are premature. “People have asked me, ‘Do you see Marco as a rival,’ and first of all, if either of us end up running, it’s a long ways in the future and neither of us is entitled to it,” he said. “So I think it would be ridiculous for me to say Marco is a rival. No, Marco is a colleague.”
Vance also highlighted the years they spent together in the Senate, describing Rubio as someone he has always respected and learned from
JD Vance sees Marco Rubio as his closest ally in the Cabinet
Vance's remarks echoed comments he made last month on the podcast Pod Force One, where he identified Rubio as his closest confidant in the administration. That interview came shortly after President Trump openly floated both men as serious contenders to eventually succeed him.
Asked then whether such speculation might strain their relationship, Vance dismissed the idea. “First of all, no, there’s not going to be any tension,” he said. “Marco is my best friend in the administration. He and I work a lot together, and a lot of the good work we do as an administration is because we’re all able to work together.”
President Donald Trump praises both JD Vance and Marco Rubio
Last month aboard Air Force One, President Trump spoke glowingly of both Vance and Rubio as he was asked about the party’s future leadership. “We have JD, obviously, the vice president, who’s great,” Trump told reporters. “Marco’s great. I’m not sure if anyone would run against those two. I think if they ever formed a group it would be unstoppable.”

Those remarks poured fuel on the rivalry narrative — something Vance continues to push back against.
JD Vance prioritizes midterms over 2028 speculation
While Hannity pressed him on whether he planned to run in 2028, Vance refused to go down that road. He said his priority is delivering results for the administration and using the remainder of the term to prepare Republicans for next year’s midterms.
“We’re going to do everything that we can to win the midterms,” Vance said, framing the election cycle as the most immediate challenge. Any talk beyond that, he argued, is pure speculation.
