SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CALIFORNIA: A mountain-biking trip in Southern California turned into a desperate escape when a wildfire that initially appeared to be far away suddenly surged toward a group of cyclists.
Video recorded along the Las Ramblas trail in San Juan Capistrano captures the moment a rider watches flames rise across the hillside before rapidly pedaling downhill to get away.
The footage offers a frightening glimpse of how quickly the Norte Fire spread through the dry terrain of Orange County, threatening nearby communities and forcing residents to evacuate.
Viral video captures wildfire's horror
At the start of the clip, a cyclist stands near the crest of a hill, watching the wildfire from a distance as smoke rises behind the ridge.
Within moments, the blaze surges across the hillside, sending thick, dark smoke billowing into the sky.
As the flames draw closer, the cyclist turns and races down the trail, scrambling to get away from the advancing fire.

A family was also caught in the rapidly unfolding emergency.
A man who had been cycling with his wife, child and a friend said the fire spread within seconds, separating him from his wife and companion as they fled.
The group eventually found one another again after escaping the immediate danger.
The video has gone viral on social media with nearly a million views in less than 24 hours.
Norte Fire forces evacuations
The Norte Fire erupted near San Clemente late Friday morning, October 16, before spreading rapidly across parts of southern Orange County.
Within hours, the wildfire had scorched about 465 acres before expanding to roughly 570 acres.

By Saturday morning, only 5% of the blaze had been contained, according to Cal Fire.
At least six homes were reported damaged or destroyed as crews raced to stop the fire from advancing.
Evacuation orders were issued for San Clemente Zones 12 and 13, along with San Juan Capistrano Zones 4, 5 and 10.

The fire erupted amid hazardous conditions across Southern California, where strong Santa Ana winds, high temperatures and dry vegetation increased the risk of rapid fire spread.
Crews were also responding to other wildfires, including the Henderson Fire near Camp Pendleton and the Bryson Fire in Malibu.
With the cause of the Norte Fire still under investigation, authorities urged residents to avoid affected areas and follow evacuation orders as firefighting efforts continued.
