Warren Buffett reveals who he's really endorsing in 2024 amid rising 'fraudulent claims' on social media
OMAHA, NEBRASKA: Billionaire Warren Buffett declared on Wednesday, October 23, that he would not support either former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.
The 94-year-old supported Democrats in three out of the past four presidential elections.
Warren Buffett issues warning against fraudulent endorsement claims amid 2024 election speculation
A memo on the website of Warren Buffett's company Berkshire Hathaway cautioned against "fraudulent claims" on social media suggesting that he had endorsed a political candidate.
"In light of the increased usage of social media, there have been numerous fraudulent claims regarding Mr Buffett’s endorsement of investment products as well as his endorsement and support of political candidates," read the brief statement.
It added, "Mr Buffett does not currently and will not prospectively endorse investment products or endorse and support political candidates."
He told CNBC, "I’m worried about people impersonating me and that’s why we put that on the Berkshire website. Nobody should believe anybody saying I'm telling them how to invest or how to vote."
His move was apparently triggered in part by a fake political endorsement on Instagram that was brought to his attention. He said, "I don’t even know how to get on Instagram," adding he wanted to make sure people knew "anything they see with my image or my voice, it just ain't me."
Buffett, often referred to as the "Oracle of Omaha," stands as one of the most successful and influential investors in the history of the US, as per the New York Post.
Warren Buffett's past endorsement
The Nebraska native's decision not to endorse follows his previous public support for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential race and former President Barack Obama's campaigns for the White House in 2012 and 2008.
Buffett did not endorse either President Joe Biden or Trump in the 2020 election.
The investor's recent announcement followed a report by the New York Times that billionaire Bill Gates had donated $50 million to a political group supporting Harris' campaign.
The founder of Microsoft, with an estimated net worth of $105.5 billion as reported by Forbes, is one of 81 billionaires supporting Harris' bid for the presidency.
Meanwhile, 50 billionaires, including Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, have backed Trump's White House campaign.
Internet believes Warren Buffett supports Donald Trump
As soon as the news was published by the Daily Mail, readers started reacting to it, with many sharing their views in the comments section.
One wrote, "Not backing Kamala IS vote for Trump. He just doesn’t want to be harassed by the disgusting biased media," and another said, "It's because he supports Trump and is scared to say so."
A person stated, "He’s probably endorsing Trump, but won’t let the public know it," and someone else echoed, "He’s supporting Trump bc he always backs Dems and if he was going to back her surely he would say it but he probably doesn’t want the vitriol of the left," said one.
An individual lauded Buffett, writing, "Good golly! A man that doesn't have to prove his worth, or lack of worth, by telling the world who he is voting for. Commendable." "Smart move. Silence the noise by publicly going neutral," expressed one more.
