CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: President Joe Biden was led on stage by his daughter Ashley Biden to deliver an emotional farewell speech on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago on Monday, August 19.

Biden was seen wiping away tears on stage as the crowd gave him a standing ovation for over four minutes. The president frequently got emotional during his address as he was repeatedly interrupted by chants of "We love Joe" and "Thank you, Joe."

President Joe Biden gets emotional on stage at DNC

Emotions ran high when Ashley Biden, the youngest living daughter of the president, announced her father on stage. Joe Biden jogged out on the stage to hug his daughter, as his wife Jill, with whom he shares Ashley, was getting misty-eyed in the audience.

A similar reaction was mirrored on Vice President Kamala Harris' face and in the faces of all who were in attendance. As the crowd rose to give a standing ovation to the president, Biden wiped off tears from his eyes while still hugging his daughter, who comforted him, helped wipe his tears, and then led him to the podium.

Joe Biden addresses pro-Palestine protests

During his speech, Joe Biden addressed Israel's assault on Gaza, which has been one of the most divisive issues of his presidency, and shared his resolve to move for a ceasefire in the war-torn region.

"A few days ago, I put forward a proposal that brought us closer to (a ceasefire) than we’ve been since October 7. We’re working around the clock, my secretary of state, (to) prevent a wider war, reunite hostages with their families, and surge humanitarian, health, and food assistance into Gaza now to end the civilian suffering of the Palestinian people and finally, finally, finally, deliver a ceasefire and end this war!” he said.

Protesters, who had denounced Biden for abetting genocide by supplying Israel with military equipment, had gathered in Chicago at the time of the convention. Biden addressed them from the stage, saying, "Those protesters out in the street, they have a point. A lot of innocent people are being killed on both sides.”

Joe Biden on passing over the torch to Kamala Harris

Joe Biden was graceful in handing the baton to Kamala Harris as he took the opportunity to taunt Trump, highlight his own achievements, and hail Harris as his political successor throughout his speech.

“The murder rate is falling faster than at any time in history,” he said early in his speech, trolling Trump's federal conviction. “Violent crime has dropped to the lowest level of more than 50 years, and crime will keep coming down when we put a prosecutor in the Oval Office instead of a convicted felon.”

“Selecting Kamala was the very first decision I made … when I became our nominee, and it was the best decision I made my whole career,” said the incumbent of his VP. He reassured people that Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov Tim Walz, would continue his work to protect voting rights and abortion access, as well as make sure the super-rich pay their fair share in taxes.

"Kamala and Tim are going to make them pay their fair share. They’ll protect Social Security, Medicare. Trump wants to cut Social Security, Medicare. Kamala and Tim will protect your freedom … your right to vote, protect your civil rights. And you know, Trump will do everything to ban abortion nationwide. Oh, he will. Kamala and Tim will do everything they possibly can. That’s why you have to elect a Senate and House to restore Roe v Wade,” he said.

Passing the torch to Harris, Biden humbly expressed, "I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career, but I gave my best to you for 50 years. Like many of you, I gave my heart and soul to our nation, and I’ve been blessed a million times in return in the support of the American people."
