WASHINGTON, DC: When Minnesota Governor Tim Walz delivered his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, it wasn’t just his words that captured attention—the emotional reaction of his 17-year-old son, Gus Walz, also stole the spotlight.

The young man, visibly moved by his father's heartfelt tribute to his family, rose to his feet and declared, "That’s my dad!"

This touching moment brought Gus, who has nonverbal learning disorder (NVLD), into the public eye, highlighting a condition that affects millions but remains largely misunderstood, as per the LA Times.

Individuals with NVLD, like Gus Walz, often excel in verbal communication

Nonverbal learning disorder (NVLD) is a condition that was first recognized in 1967, but it still lacks a formal clinical definition.

Despite the name, NVLD does not imply an inability to speak. In fact, individuals with NVLD, like Gus, often excel in verbal communication. The disorder is characterized by a significant gap between verbal and nonverbal skills, particularly affecting visual-spatial processing.

This means that while someone with NVLD may have an impressive vocabulary and strong reading abilities, they might struggle with tasks that require spatial awareness, such as reading maps, telling time on an analog clock, or balancing a budget.

The NVLD Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness about the disorder, explains that these challenges often extend to motor skills, making everyday tasks like tying shoes, using silverware, or handwriting difficult.

In this way, NVLD can be seen as the opposite of dyslexia—where reading and verbal skills are strong but nonverbal, spatial, and motor skills are weaker.

According to a 2020 study published in JAMA Network Open, an estimated 3% to 4% of children and adolescents in the United States may have NVLD. Another study, published in 2023 in Scientific Reports, suggests that the prevalence among children could be as high as 8%.

Despite these significant numbers, NVLD remains relatively unknown to the general public, partly due to its overlap with other neurodevelopmental disorders like autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Celebrities like Chris Rock have revealed diagnosis of NVLD

For children with NVLD, the early school years can be deceptively smooth, as their strong verbal abilities often enable them to excel in subjects like reading and basic math.

However, as education progresses and learning becomes more abstract—focusing on patterns, concepts, and higher-order thinking—these students often encounter difficulties.

Tasks that involve organizing thoughts, planning multi-step projects, or comprehending complex math problems can become overwhelming.

Scott Bezsylko, the executive director of Winston Preparatory School, which specializes in neurodiverse students, observed that the challenges faced by those with NVLD often remain unnoticed until later in their academic careers.

He compared NVLD to dyslexia but in reverse, highlighting that while reading and verbal communication are strengths, nonverbal cues and spatial reasoning are significant weaknesses.

The difficulties associated with NVLD extend beyond the classroom. Social interactions can be especially challenging, as individuals with NVLD may struggle to interpret nonverbal communication cues such as facial expressions, body language, or tone of voice.

This can result in social awkwardness or misunderstandings, as individuals with NVLD might not recognize when they’ve crossed personal boundaries or made someone uncomfortable. To compensate, they may ask numerous questions, which can sometimes be seen as intrusive or annoying.

These social challenges were echoed by comedian Chris Rock, who revealed in a 2021 interview with Extra that he had been diagnosed with NVLD as an adult.

Reflecting on his experiences, Rock shared, "I kind of have a hard time with nonverbal cues with people. I always have… They say 70% of communication is nonverbal. So my relationships, even with my family or women I dated or whatever, there was always something a little off, and I couldn’t put my finger on it."

Gus Walz's NVLD wasn't officially recognized until he was a teenager

Gus Walz's journey with NVLD started early in life, but it wasn't until he got older that his parents, both educators, fully recognized the extent of his challenges.

In an interview with People magazine, Tim and his wife Gwen shared that they noticed differences between Gus and his peers from an early age.

These differences became more apparent as Gus entered his teenage years, leading to a diagnosis of NVLD. In addition to NVLD, Gus has also been diagnosed with ADHD and an anxiety disorder, conditions that frequently co-occur with NVLD.

The Walz family’s openness about Gus’ condition has helped to bring NVLD into the public conversation, offering a glimpse into the challenges faced by those living with the disorder.

Gus’ preference for solitary activities, like playing video games, and his struggle with social interactions are common among individuals with NVLD.

These traits, while sometimes misunderstood, are part of the broader pattern of difficulties that define the disorder.

The exact causes of NVLD remain unclear, though research has identified some neurological differences between individuals with and without the disorder.

Studies sponsored by the NVLD Project have identified variations in both hemispheres of the brain, particularly in regions related to visual-spatial processing and higher-order thinking.
