WASHINGTON. DC: A war of words over US immigration policy ignited Sunday, June 15, after former president Barack Obama publicly condemned the dehumanization of immigrants, prompting a caustic reply from President Donald Trump's White House.

Obama, in a carefully worded post on X (formerly Twitter), criticized the portrayal of immigrant families as threats, warning against “demonization” and urging Americans to “treat each other with dignity and respect.”

His comments came amid mounting public backlash to a wave of aggressive Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in major cities across the US, including Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City.

White House fires back after Barack Obama’s remarks

The Trump administration didn’t hold back. In a statement to The Daily Beast, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson dismissed Obama’s remarks outright.

“If the American people cared what Obama thought, they would’ve followed his advice and elected open-borders radical Kamala Harris,” she said. “But it’s President Trump that’s in the White House, and he is fulfilling his promise to the American people securing our borders and deporting illegal aliens.”

In his post, Obama reflected on the legacy of his Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, an initiative that protected young immigrants brought to the US as children.

“Thirteen years ago, my administration acted to protect young people who were American in every single way but one: on paper,” Obama wrote.

“DACA was an example of how we can be a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. And it’s an example worth remembering today, when families with similar backgrounds who just want to live, work, and support their communities, are being demonized and treated as enemies.”

This comes after Trump took to Truth Social and issued an urgent directive to ICE to deliver what he dubbed “the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History.”

Trump’s rhetoric struck a jarringly different tone. In his post, he described Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York as “Democrat Power Centers” that “use Illegal Aliens to expand their Voter Base.” He claimed, without offering evidence, that illegal immigrants were stealing jobs and benefits from American citizens.

“I want our Brave ICE Officers to know that REAL Americans are cheering you on every day,” Trump wrote. “The American People want our Cities, Schools, and Communities to be SAFE and FREE from Illegal Alien Crime, Conflict, and Chaos.”

He wrapped up his message saying, “Now go, GET THE JOB DONE! – DJT.”

Former president Barack Obama faced intense backlash after appearing to criticize the Donald Trump administration's immigration policies. Meanwhile, some praised the federal government for taking action to protect the borders.

One user posted on X, “Greatest President of all time! Thank you for protecting our borders @realDonaldTrump.”

Another user took a direct shot at Obama’s immigration record and commented, “You deported more illegals than any other president in US history.”

One person said, “You were the deporter in chief. Never forget that.”

“You were the most divisive president we’ve ever had. Here you are, still dividing. Stop,” another wrote.

One commentator sarcastically wrote, “Mr. Obama, your time has passed. Take a seat and watch.”

Another added, “You're the only ex-nightmare that keeps yapping.”
