WASHINGTON, DC: Best-selling author Stephen King believes that in the years ahead, many of Donald Trump’s current supporters will attempt to distance themselves from the president.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, King predicted that history would ultimately cast Trump in an unflattering light, leading some voters to deny they ever backed him.

Stephen King warns of future ‘backlash’ against Trump’s legacy

“It’s a question, like the song says, ‘Which side are you on?’” King said, defending his frequent criticism of Trump on social media despite knowing some of his fans may be loyal to the Republican leader.

“There’s a story about the home run that was heard around the world,” King shared. “There are… tens of thousands of people who will say, ‘I saw (the baseball player Bobby Thomson) hit that home run,’ and there were only, like, 5,000 people in the stands that day. So I think the opposite is true (with Trump). Twenty or 30 years down the line, when I’ll be dead, and you’ll be old, I think a lot of people are going to say, ‘Well, I never voted for Trump.’”

King also referenced his 1979 novel The Dead Zone, noting that its storyline seemed to anticipate Trump’s rise to the presidency — something he said once felt more like fiction than reality. “Nobody would have believed where we are today, with Gestapo agents in the street — they call themselves ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), but they’re basically guys that are armed, they are wearing masks, they have huge amounts of money to spend, and they are everywhere.”

White House fires back at Stephen King

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital, “Since Stephen has spent so long writing fiction, it’s understandable that he’d have no grasp on reality.”

With nearly seven million followers on X, King predicted on September 1 that voters would sour on Trump before the next election. He warned, “Trump and his greedhead cronies may get a big surprise in spite of their efforts to rig the 2026 election. They could find themselves swamped by a blue wave. Americans are wising up to the fact that Trump is turning the American dream into a nightmare.”

King has long been an outspoken political voice, previously calling for Trump’s impeachment during his first term and comparing the administration’s migrant detention policies to something out of one of his horror stories.
