DENVER, COLORADO: Hazardous winter weather sweeping across the Central United States turned dangerous Sunday morning when icy roads and low visibility sparked multiple chain-reaction crashes on Interstate 70, involving as many as 50 vehicles. The pileups brought traffic to a standstill, with emergency crews working amid continuous snowfall to clear the wreckage.
Colorado State Patrol responds to crashes amid icy road conditions
As winter weather hit Colorado on Sunday, dozens of cars crashed in multiple pileups on icy stretches of I-70. According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), they responded to several crashes as mountain roads became treacherously slick with limited visibility.
No injuries were reported, but the accidents caused significant property damage. CSP urged drivers to exercise caution as conditions remained hazardous.
Multiple vehicle pileups close lanes on Interstate 70
The first multi-vehicle crash occurred just before 11:30 a.m. west of Gypsum in Eagle County, involving approximately 20 vehicles. The westbound lanes of I-70 were temporarily closed, but all vehicles involved were eventually removed from the roadway.
About 15 minutes later, another pileup was reported in the eastbound lanes just east of Glenwood Springs near the No Name Lane exit. CSP said roughly 30 vehicles were caught in that crash.

“Once the road is suitable for travel, emergency vehicles will begin leading vehicles through the area at slow speeds,” CSP stated.
As of 4:45 p.m. Sunday, one lane of westbound I-70 remained closed between the Bair Ranch and Hanging Lake exits. All lanes reopened later that night.
Winter weather forecast warns of intensifying snow across Colorado
Forecasts indicate winter weather will worsen in the mountains, and drivers are advised to prepare for hazardous conditions. Denver International Airport, the official National Weather Service reporting site, recorded 0.2 inches of snow on Saturday morning.
This was the second-latest first measurable snowfall of the season and the latest first trace of snow on record in Denver’s history. More snow and colder temperatures are expected, with the high country receiving the heaviest accumulation, potentially up to 10 inches over the weekend.
