Six-story building partially collapses in New York City

A section of the 46-unit structure in the Morris Heights district of the Bronx crumbled onto the pavement, as reported by WABC-TV.

The New York City Fire Department officials confirmed that no casualties were discovered amidst the debris of the six-story residential building that suffered a partial collapse on Monday afternoon, according to the outlet.

"Miraculously, no one was severely injured at the partial building collapse," New York City Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said on X.

"For hours, they searched for anyone who may have been trapped or injured. We have confirmed that no one was under that pile," she added.

A report cited 'unsafe facade conditions'

The Red Cross reportedly stepped in to aid 37 households, approximately 138 residents, who were displaced due to the collapse. Some of these individuals were guided to a service center established at a nearby public school.

Post-search, the city's Department of Buildings plans to investigate to assess the stability of the structure.

The Housing Preservation and Development has recorded 178 complaints over the past two years, with 103 unresolved violations dating back to May 2019.

James Oddo, the Commissioner of the Department of Buildings, stated that the building's owner submitted their latest report in March 2021.

This report identified seven unresolved violations, including "unsafe facade conditions," as per ABC 7.

Records from the Buildings Department allegedly reveal that an inspection conducted in 2020 discovered cracked bricks and loose, damaged mortar on the building's facade.

Oddo mentioned on Monday that repair work had commenced, but he did not believe any workers were present at the time of the collapse.
