'She needs to step down': Internet trolls Nikki Haley after Donald Trump wins Michigan primary
WASHINGTON, DC: In Michigan's Republican primary on Tuesday, February 27 night, former president Donald Trump easily defeated opponent Nikki Haley to earn the nomination for the sixth time in a row.
About 44 percent of the votes were counted in the Great Lake State, where Trump got 67.1 percent of the vote versus Haley's 27.7 percent. Thus far, the former president has defeated Haley in five states as well as the US Virgin Islands by a double-digit margin.
Donald Trump wins Michigan primary
In a phone conversation, Donald Trump praised his supporters in Michigan who were present at a state GOP watch party, describing his win margin as "far greater" than he had anticipated.
Trump said on the call, "I just want to thank everybody, you’ve been so incredible. The numbers are far greater than we even anticipated. We win Michigan; we win the whole thing. Cannot come fast enough."
At the Grand Rapids watch party, Michigan Republican Party Chairman Pete Hoekstra claimed that Trump was now the "presumptive nominee," as reported by NBC News.
According to Olivia Perez-Cubas, a spokesperson for the Haley campaign, Trump "losing about 35% of the vote" ought to act as a "flashing warning sign for Trump in November."
Trump "lost Michigan Republicans [in] the state House, state Senate, and Governor's mansion" since his win over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016, according to a statement from Perez-Cubas.
She added, "What was once a beacon for the conservative cause, the Michigan Republican Party is now fractured and divided. Let this serve as another warning sign that what has happened in Michigan will continue to play out across the country. So long as Donald Trump is at the top of the ticket, Republicans will keep losing to the socialist left. Our children deserve better."
The former governor of South Carolina has pledged to stick with her presidential campaign despite her run of setbacks, at least until the Super Tuesday slate on March 5, when 16 primaries and caucuses will provide 874 delegates.
