BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA: A fatal confrontation between two rival groups at the Mall of Louisiana on Thursday, April 23, left a 17-year-old boy dead and 10 others wounded.

Following the chaotic gunfire near the food court, law enforcement successfully apprehended five suspects as they continue to investigate the nature of the dispute.

Emergency responders rushed six victims to a local hospital, where a 17-year-old boy ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

While the total number of injured reached 10, officials confirmed that all affected individuals were transported off-site for medical care.

In the immediate aftermath, Governor Jeff Landry urged the public to stay clear of the area, stating, “I am aware of the active shooter scene at the Mall of Louisiana. I am in coordination with law enforcement and we will update as we know more. Please avoid the area.”

He added that he and his wife were “praying for those affected and are grateful for a quick response by our law enforcement officials.”

The violence erupted just before 2:30 pm, when a heated argument between two groups escalated into an exchange of gunfire in the crowded shopping center.

Police Chief Thomas Morse stated during a press conference that the incident was not a random act of violence.

"This does not appear to be a random act of violence but a very targeted disagreement between two groups of people," Morse explained, though he noted that “unfortunately there were some innocent people in the area who might have also caught some rounds.”

Leaders vow accountability after Baton Rouge mall shooting

As the investigation remains active, local and state leaders have made it clear that the perpetrators will face severe consequences.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, taking to X, expressed her outrage over the shooting, stating, “This kind of violence in a place where my family and so many others routinely shop is completely unacceptable. This lawlessness will NOT stand in Louisiana. Once these individuals are found, and I’m confident they will be, they will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

Meanwhile, Mayor-President Sid Edwards issued a direct warning. “To the thugs who did this, we are going to catch you,” he said.

He further asserted, "We're not going to have this in Baton Rouge. It's not going to happen and I have complete confidence in our law enforcement partners that we're going to go out and grab these guys and get them off the street."

Chief Morse has since assured the community that there is no ongoing danger, promising that “as we start developing suspects, we will do everything we can.”
