LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Since Kamala Harris assumed the role of Vice President, every aspect of her personal life has been dissected and debated by critics. Many often target her past relationships, particularly her marriage to Doug Emhoff.

Some observers have even labeled aspects of their relationship as "weird." Yet, one of the most intriguing—and certainly conversation-starting—relationships in her life is her bond with Doug’s ex-wife, Kerstin Emhoff. While unconventional, experts say this relationship might actually make a lot of sense.

Kerstin Emhoff supported Doug’s marriage to Kamala Harris

Doug and Kerstin Emhoff were married for 15 years and have two children, Cole and Ella. Their marriage ended in 2008 after Doug confessed to an extramarital affair. Despite the drama that typically follows such an expose, Doug and Kerstin managed to move past their differences and maintain a cordial relationship.

In fact, they became friends, and Kerstin even supported Doug’s marriage to Kamala Harris. She insisted that Doug had become a much better husband in his second marriage.

"Of course, he's a better husband, and that's great," Kerstin told Time magazine. "That's how it should be." This warmth extended to Kamala Harris as well. After she and Doug tied the knot, Kamala and Kerstin quickly became close friends. Harris even humorously noted in her memoir 'The Truths We Hold': "We sometimes joke that our modern family is almost a little too functional."

Dr Patrick Wanis, a behavior and relationship expert, offered his take on why this seemingly unusual friendship works so well. Wanis—who created SRTT Therapy and authored 'Get Over Your Ex Now!'—explained that society often expects women, particularly an ex-wife and a new wife, to be rivals. However, Harris and Kerstin's relationship defies this expectation.

Wanis suggested that their mutual respect is likely rooted in their shared love for the children they co-parent. In an interview with Nicki Swift, Dr Wanis described the relationship between Kamala and Kerstin as "rare," especially given the circumstances surrounding Doug and Kerstin's divorce.

When a marriage ends due to an affair, the dynamic between the ex-wife and the new wife is often fraught with tension and animosity. The fact that Doug treats Kamala better than he treated Kerstin could have been a source of jealousy. Instead, the two women have managed to form a genuine bond.

"It is more common to see the ex-wife and the current wife working to undermine or devalue each other rather than being friends, supporting each other, or working together to raise the children," Wanis said. Yet, Kamala and Kerstin seem to have avoided this pitfall entirely.

Wanis believes that the foundation of their relationship lies in their shared love for Cole and Ella. Harris did not rush to assume the role of "Momala," a title she eventually earned. Instead, she waited for the right time to become involved in the children's lives.

As Wanis put it, "Kerstin, as the mother of these two children, would naturally respond favorably to such a strong and nurturing gesture by Kamala because it demonstrates love and prioritizes the children."

Harris's respect for Kerstin as an "incredible" mother has only strengthened their bond. "When both the biological mother, Kerstin, and the stepmother, Kamala, prioritize the children, they naturally develop a strong bond and relationship," Wanis explained.

Kamala Harris brings qualities of Kerstin Emhoff’s friendship to her politics

While their friendship might not have been part of any grand political strategy, Dr Patrick Wanis suggested that it reveals key qualities that Kamala Harris brings to her professional life.

"Based on this example of her personal conduct, we can expect that the qualities she exhibits in her personal life — such as being giving, caring, thoughtful, kind, and considerate — would also be reflected in her professional life. Kamala has shown a strong form of unconditional love in the ways she integrates Kerstin into the family and lovingly cares for Cole and Ella as her own," Wanis explained.

"We might expect that a Harris administration would continue these behaviors and traits, leading to policies and actions rooted in kindness, equal opportunity, thoughtfulness, consideration, compassion for fellow beings, and encouragement with an emphasis on family, love, and care for children, and healthy parenting," he added.

Wanis also noted how Harris raised children she did not give birth to herself. "Kamala Harris demonstrates what the feminine energy and approach truly represent—the closest thing to unconditional love," he insisted.
