NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former President Donald Trump met with Polish President Andrzej Duda in Manhattan to discuss wide-ranging issues on the ongoing wars and other topics related to world peace, the New York Post reported.

According to the Trump campaign, President Duda's two-and-a-half-hour discussion with the presumed Republican nominee unfolded in the latter's Trump Tower residence on Wednesday, April 17.

Among the topics explored were the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, the situation in Israel, and "many other topics having to do with getting to world peace."

Donald Trump praises Polish President

Addressing reporters after entering the building's lobby alongside the leader from a NATO nation, Trump lauded Duda, referring to him as "my friend."

"He's doing a fantastic job," the White House hopeful said.

Referring to their diplomatic ties during his initial term in the Oval Office alongside Duda, who assumed office in 2015, Trump voiced assurance in working with him once more, hinting at his potential victory in November. "We may have to do it again," the ex-president said.

"We've had a very good and personal relationship. Never had even a problem, not even a minor problem, we agree on so much," he added.

Trump also recounted his 2017 trip to Poland and lauded the Polish people's "steadfast defense of their sovereignty" and "commitment to the security of Europe's borders from any and all threats," as per a readout by the Trump campaign.

Judge Juan Merchan scheduled Trump's criminal trial to begin on April 15, which would make it the first criminal prosecution of a former American president. Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records last year, which prosecutors say was an effort to hide a potential sex scandal, both before and after the 2016 election. Around 150 people gathered in front of the police barricades near the Trump Tower to watch the Trump-Duda handshake, with some supporters of the Former President shouting "USA," "Save America," and "Stop the War."

A divided take on Ukraine

Duda, who has been a steadfast advocate for Ukraine since the Russian invasion in 2022, has joined Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in urging the US Congress to approve additional military aid for the war-torn nation.

However, Trump holds a skeptical stand on more Ukraine aid from the US, and he recently argued Congress should not pass additional assistance "unless it is done as a loan."

Regardless of their differing perspectives on Ukraine, both Trump and Duda share a similar stance on NATO members boosting their defense spending.

In March, the Polish President insisted that the NATO countries designate at least 3% of GDP to defense in light of "growing threats." Similarly, the former commander-in-chief has urged NATO allies to "pay up," claiming the US was paying a lion's share in the alliance.

In February, Trump issued a startling warning to NATO nations that were not meeting their obligations, threatening that the US would not guarantee their protection in the event of a Russian attack.
