ABC host George Stephanopoulos says 2024 election cannot be treated normally, Internet replies 'he is not impartial'

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: ABC host George Stephanopoulos told his viewers about the abnormality of the upcoming election and how it would be a "test" for the United States and its media on the Sunday, April 28, episode of 'This Week'.

The introductory part of the episode, where the host discussed the presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump's legal troubles, deviated sharply from the usual style.

This was seen after President Joe Biden urged journalists to focus less on horse-race politics and "rise up to the seriousness of the moment" at the end of his speech at the White House correspondents' dinner the previous night, April 27.

"Move past the horse race numbers and the 'gotcha' moments and the distractions and the sideshows that have come to dominate and sensationalize our politics, and focus on what’s actually at stake. I think in your hearts, you know what's at stake. The stakes couldn’t be higher," said the incumbent.

George Stephanopoulos' remarks

"Until now, no American president had ever faced a criminal trial," began Stephanopoulos on the show.

"No American president had ever faced a criminal indictment for retaining and concealing classified documents. No American president had ever faced a federal indictment or a state indictment for trying to overturn an election, or been named an unindicted co-conspirator in two other states for the same crime. No American president has faced hundreds of millions of dollars in fines for business fraud, defamation, and sexual abuse," the host continued.

He went on to argue that "the "scale of the abnormality is so staggering," that it was easy for everyone to treat the 2024 presidential race as ordinary even though that is not the case.

"It’s all too easy to fall into reflexive habits, to treat this as a normal campaign, where both sides embrace the rule of law, where both sides are dedicated to a debate based on facts and the peaceful transfer of power. But that is not what’s happening this election year. Those bedrock tenets of democracy are being tested in a way we haven’t seen since the Civil War. It’s a test for the candidates, for those of us in the media, and for all of us as citizens," he stated.



 

Internet slams George Stephanopoulos for his comments 

The internet wasn't pleased by the ABC host's comments and slammed him by accusing him of being biased.

"Stephanopoulos was Bill Clinton's Chief of Staff. He is not an impartial player in politics," a social medi user wrote on X.



 

"Probably so they can’t see the Democrats cheating," jibed another.



 

"Treated the same as last time , by cheating," echoed a third.



 

"The press already does this," commented a fourth.



 

"Translation: it’s ok for journalists to take sides," quipped a fifth user.
