IDAHO, UNITED STATES: Internet users were left furious recently when the trial of Bryan Kohberger, the suspect in the University of Idaho quadruple murders, was postponed once again, likely to March 2025.
Kohberger, 29, was a criminology student in Pennsylvania. He has been accused of barging into an off-campus residence in Moscow, Idaho, on November 13, 2022, and brutally stabbing four University of Idaho students, Ethan Chapin, 20, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Madison Mogen, 21, to their deaths.
In a recent development, Kohberger submitted a petition to the court requesting a change of trial location, aiming to move the proceedings away from the town of his alleged crime.
Bryan Kohberger's trial delayed again
According to the Daily Mail, Kohberger's trial, which has been highly anticipated, faced another delay recently, with Idaho officials announcing the setback on Wednesday, February 28.
Despite nearly two years passing since the tragic murders, the trial is still in its introductory stages, and a hearing on Wednesday, which saw the judge declining to set a date, sparked criticism.
This latest delay means that Kohberger is not expected to face trial until at least the spring of 2025, prompting calls for officials to bring the ongoing disputes to a resolution.
Former FBI special agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, speaking to the Daily Mail, expressed concern for the victim families, stating, "The victim families are really the sufferers with these delays. Unfortunately, it looks like we're still years away from trial."
Coffindaffer highlighted the frustration caused by the delayed trial, particularly for the families of the victims, likening the process to "picking a scab off the wound."
Before the recent hearing, the family of one of the victims, Kaylee Goncalves, expressed on Facebook, "Feeling anxious about tomorrow, but our family will continue to show up for EVERY court date. The Goncalves Family will remain strong and united. We will NEVER give up. Thank you to EVERYONE!!! You give us the strength and courage to continue this battle. You are our FAMILY!!! WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. SO MUCH LOVE TO YOU ALL. PLEASE PRAY FOR US."
Despite their ongoing support, the family is yet to respond to the latest delay announcement. Coffindaffer emphasized, "They have to see him, they have to listen to the details, it's more and more painful for [the victims' families]," and noted that the defense's use of delay tactics adds to their distress.
As per the Daily Mail, she suggested, "There's all these things that can happen when you delay, delay, delay. In my opinion, the defense knows this and they will continue to delay."
While prosecutors had pushed for a trial to commence this summer, Kohberger's defense attorney argued for a delay, stating, "Not only do we have a huge volume of information, the way I’m getting it is completely disorganized. And it’s like if you wanted to play 52-card pickup with 100,000 decks of cards and throw them in the air, and I have to go figure out how to put them together."
The defense also faced scrutiny over Kohberger's alibi, with the judge setting a deadline for its establishment in court.
Coffindaffer speculated that the lack of a concrete alibi could be another delay tactic employed by Kohberger's defense team. She noted, "I know Judge Judge will likely be lenient to a degree too, because this is a death penalty case. He doesn't want to be overturned in his rulings, and there are over 50 terabytes of information in the case, so the defense has all of that working on their side," as reported by the Daily Mail.
Internet users assert delay in trial is 'absolute disgrace'
The Internet has a lot to say about the judicial system in light of the delay in Kohberger's trial.
A social media user described the delay in trial as "Horrible."
Another individual wrote, "Delay it ten years, it will not matter - no one will ever forget what this demon did to those kids."
A user commented, "It should be illegal that that monster can keep finding & using loopholes"
Another noted, "Justice delayed is justice denied."
A user stated, "This is an absolute disgrace. Shame on you Idaho legal system."
