PHOENIX, ARIZONA: The Phoenix police have confirmed the identity of a homicide suspect who was fatally shot during an exchange with officers following his escape from the site of an earlier murder this week.

Devin Montgomery drew a firearm and discharged it several times at officers who were trying to engage him on Thursday, May 16, afternoon at an apartment complex, according to a police statement released on Saturday, May 18.

An officer returned fire, striking 23-year-old Montgomery, who then detained and was collapsed, according to police. He was taken to a nearby hospital and declared deceased, US News reported.

Despite a bullet from the assailant striking a police vehicle, no injuries were reported.

Police have identified Montgomery as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting of a man at a residence a few blocks away earlier in the day. The victim, 29-year-old Brandon Russell, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The investigations into both shootings are ongoing.

Justin Strawser was also killed in shootout

Justin Michael Strawser, a suspect in a shooting that left two dead and another injured, was also killed in a shootout with deputies outside another Mooresville home. Strawser was wearing a bulletproof vest and was shot at while donning it.

The incident was not random as Strawser and the three people who were shot knew each other. The sheriff's office identified narcotics and robbery as potential reasons.

Negotiators from the sheriff's office reportedly tried to talk Strawser into leaving the encircled house, according to Campbell. The minors refused to cooperate, he continued, and they also discovered that there were four juveniles inside.

Some of Strawser's bullets, according to the authorities, hit the sheriff's office vehicles. The sheriff claims that Strawser told the negotiators about his involvement in the fatal incident at the other house.

After deputies used tear gas to get the kids to leave the house, the sheriff claimed that Strawser followed them out, put on the bulletproof vest, and started shooting at the officers.

Two men, aged 22 and 24, were killed in a house shooting in North Carolina, with three deputies placed on administrative leave.
