WASHINGTON, DC: Former Representative Adam Kinzinger, an Illinois Republican, proclaimed the death of the Republican Party on Friday, July 19, following the Republican National Convention (RNC) of 2024.

The Republican National Convention commenced earlier this week in Milwaukee, where former president Donald Trump formally accepted the GOP's nomination for the 2024 presidential election.

Trump's acceptance speech lasted over 90 minutes, setting the tone for the four-day event. Various speakers, including Trump's family members, GOP officials, candidates, entertainers, celebrities, and industry leaders, took the stage to support Trump's nomination and vision for the future.

Adam Kinzinger's response and GOP criticism

In response to the convention, Adam Kinzinger, a well-known critic of Donald Trump who served as a representative of Illinois until 2023, voiced his discontent on X, formerly known as Twitter. He criticized the convention and declared the death of the GOP.

"The convention spoke loudly: the GOP is dead. Now that we know it, time to push hard," Kinzinger wrote, sharing a link to his Substack page where he elaborated on his views.

In his Substack article titled 'The Convention Spoke and Told Us: The GOP is Dead', Kinzinger offered examples of how the RNC demonstrated that Trump had transformed the GOP into a "cult of personality".

Kinzinger stated, "It was called the Republican National Convention, but in fact, it had nothing to do with the GOP most of us once knew. Gone were the party's serious policy debates and platform planks. In their place was a celebration of Donald Trump, who has succeeded in converting one of the country's two major parties into a cult of personality."

Kinzinger highlighted Trump's choice of Senator JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate and the inclusion of former White House adviser Peter Navarro as speakers at the convention. He argued that these decisions exemplified the "death of the old GOP".

He wrote, "The death of the old GOP was signaled at the start of the week when Trump chose the chameleon JD Vance as his running mate. With the choice of Vance, Trump indicated that he has no concern about appeasing the old-style GOPers, who would have been reassured if he had chosen a Marco Rubio or a Tim Scott as a running mate."

JD Vance, announced as Trump's running mate earlier this week, has drawn national attention and scrutiny from Democrats due to his conservative stance and close alliance with Trump since his election to the US Senate in 2022.

However, Vance's political journey is complex; before his political career, he was a staunch critic of Trump, even voting for independent candidate Evan McMullin in the 2016 election.

Kinzinger also criticized Peter Navarro's appearance at the convention. Navarro, recently released from federal prison after a four-month sentence for refusing to cooperate with a congressional investigation into the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, spoke at the convention.

Navarro's speech, filled with "falsehoods", riled up the crowd, according to Kinzinger.

"Further evidence that the convention was dominated by extremists came when Trump's former White House advisor Peter Navarro raced to appear at the podium just hours after his release from federal prison," Kinzinger wrote.

"Because it is now the Trump Party, the crowd in Milwaukee lapped up Navarro's message of fear which, after all, is the gateway to rage."

Despite his criticism, Kinzinger urged traditional Republicans and independents to not lose hope and to continue fighting against Trump's influence.

He wrote, "I won't hide the fact that I grieve the old GOP and fear the cult of Trump. I am equally concerned, though, by Democrats who are shrinking from the fight, concluding that Trump's election is inevitable. I would say that given a remnant of traditional Republicans remains, and independents must be turned off by a Trump who wants to be emperor. It's time to gather our courage and energy. The fight against him is not lost."

In an emailed statement to Newsweek on Saturday afternoon, the Republican National Committee criticized Kinzinger's career and reiterated its support for Trump.

Committee spokesperson Kush Desai stated, "The only thing that's dead is Adam Kinzinger's political career, which has largely amounted to getting on his knees on CNN and debasing himself to carry water for Joe Biden and Democrats – the same Democrats who gleefully redistricted him out of Congress. Unified behind President Donald J Trump and his vision to Make America Great Again, the GOP is going to keep doing something Kinzinger will never experience on his own: winning."

Internet reacts to Adam Kinzinger's criticism of Milwaukee RNC

Adam Kinzinger's declaration of the GOP's demise prompted a wave of mockery on social media.

"Lol ok soyboy," one posted on X.

"You are absolutely out of your mind! Go back to bed," another wrote.

"The utter desperation lol," someone else remarked.

"You're right Adam. The GOP is dead. We are the America 1st party. Done with RINOS and warmongers like you. Bye Felicia," a comment read.

"You should make an appointment with your physician and up your meds," another advised.
