Alex Murdaugh faces sentencing for financial fraud
On Tuesday, November 28, the disgraced South Carolina lawyer will face justice as he is sentenced for financial fraud against Satterfield's family. Satterfield had worked for over 20 years at the Murdaugh family’s luxurious hunting property when she mysteriously died in 2018 after allegedly “tripping over the dogs.”
For the first time since her suspicious death, Satterfield’s heartbroken family will finally be able to confront Murdaugh directly in court when victims are allowed to speak at his sentencing hearing.
Circuit Court Judge Clifton Newman granted victims the opportunity to address Murdaugh, who has admitted to stealing nearly $5 million in settlement funds from Satterfield’s sons after her death.
Gloria Satterfield's suspicious death
Satterfield tragically died at age 57 under uncertain circumstances while working at the Murdaugh estate in 2018. Leading up to his dramatic downfall, Murdaugh was a high-profile lawyer from a powerful legal dynasty in Hampton County, South Carolina.
After Satterfield’s death, Murdaugh manipulated her grieving family into improperly recovering damages from his insurance without properly investigating her suspicious death.
“I heard you say that you wrongfully took. No, you didn't wrongfully take, you stole,” Satterfield family attorney Eric Bland plans to tell Murdaugh in court. “I heard you say you misrepresented. No, you didn't misrepresent, you lied. Yeah, let's not sugarcoat what you did. You're a thief and a liar.”
Murdaugh convinced Satterfield’s children to sue him in order to secretly collect nearly $5 million in wrongful death settlement funds, which he then stole for himself. Last October, Murdaugh pleaded guilty to pocketing insurance payments from Satterfield’s death along with millions more swindled from other clients at his former law firm.
Alex Murdaugh confesses he lied about Gloria Satterfield's cause of death
Murdaugh has confessed that his claim that Satterfield died from falling after tripping over his dogs was completely fabricated, but he has still not revealed the true circumstances around her death.
“It’s not over yet, but to be able to face this monster — and he's going to have to listen,” Bland said ahead of finally confronting Murdaugh for answers in Satterfield’s unresolved death.
The sentencing comes on the heels of Murdaugh’s murder conviction last month for the 2021 shooting deaths of his wife Maggie and son Paul, for which he now faces life imprisonment. However, almost five years later, no one has still been charged for the suspicious death of Satterfield.
Though Satterfield’s family has forgiven Murdaugh, the sentencing represents long-awaited justice. "He can smile and he can smirk, but he can hear, and the words are going to go in his ears and he's going to listen,” Bland said. Facing over 100 charges, Murdaugh’s stunning fall from grace continues in the riveting legal saga that has captivated the nation.
