WASHINGTON, DC: Liberal US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has introduced articles of impeachment against conservative Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, according to her office on July 10.

It is unlikely that the initiative will pass in the Republican-dominated House of Representatives. For an official to be removed through this process, the House must vote for impeachment, and the Senate must then vote to convict.

Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito face allegations of ethical misconduct

For years, Democrats have criticized the court, with its conservative 6:3 majority, for decisions that promote causes favored by the right.

Recent actions have included restricting abortion rights, expanding gun rights, rejecting race-conscious admissions at colleges, and a ruling granting former presidents broad immunity from prosecution for official acts - a decision that has favored Donald Trump, the New York Post reports.

Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement that Thomas and Alito’s “pattern of refusal to recuse from consequential matters before the court in which they hold widely documented financial and personal entanglements constitutes a grave threat to American rule of law.”

Some Democratic congressmen have accused Thomas and Alito, who are among the court's most conservative justices, of ethical misconduct. Activists have criticized Thomas after reports that he failed to disclose travel and lodging expenses provided by a wealthy benefactor and that his wife was involved in efforts to overturn Trump's 2020 election defeat.

Thomas has claimed that he considered the trips to be personal entertainment, which he argued was exempt from disclosure. Justice Alito was also criticized after it was reported that flags associated with efforts to overturn the 2020 election results were flown outside his homes in Virginia and New Jersey. Alito explained that it was his wife, not himself, who put up the flags.
