HOUSTON, UNITED STATES: The parents of twin baby sisters, who were only six weeks old, have been charged after the babies were beaten and starved to death.

The parents, Angelina Belinda Calderon and Fernando Vega, who are both 21 years old, were arrested on Friday for abusing their six-week-old twin daughters, whose names have not been shared.

Houston police discover twin sisters with discolored skin and both old and new injuries

Houston police responded to their residence at 2107 Linden Creek Way around 11:15 am on October 4 and discovered the infants unresponsive.

Fernando Vega informed the police that he dropped Calderon off at work and upon returning home, he found the twins unresponsive. However, the autopsy revealed that the babies had succumbed to injuries inflicted by a blunt object.

Assistant District Attorney Appelbaum described the allegations as horrific. The twins, approximately six weeks old, exhibited signs of being struck, severe malnourishment, and a combination of both old and new injuries.

Appelbaum added that these injuries and the twins' malnourishment were issues that a reasonable caregiver should have noticed, which is why they are charged with neglect.

Vega informed the police that the twins were fussy during the night, so he placed them in a bassinet.

Calderon did not awaken the babies in the morning as she was preparing to go to work, as per DailyMail.

The police discovered the babies on the couch with discolored skin, and numerous bruises, and one of the girls had suffered broken bones.

According to court documents, the babies were born prematurely but had not received medical attention since their discharge from the hospital.

What did the autopsy report?

Pathologist Dr Jesus Rico from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science conducted the autopsy and identified several injuries on one of the infants. These injuries comprised dehydration, bruises scattered across various parts of the body, and fractures, indicating prior abuse.

Both twins were discovered to be malnourished. One exhibited signs of acute brain bleeding, while the other displayed bleeding in the brain and spinal cord, suggesting recent trauma.

Following receipt of the autopsy report, Calderon and Vega were charged with causing serious bodily injury to a child. They are presently detained at the Harris County Jail on a bond set at $750,000.

What happened in Angelina Belinda Calderon’s court appearance?

Mario Madrid, Vega's defense attorney, remarked, "He appeared to be in shock, the situation was overwhelming for him, and in court, I found him to be very respectful. However, he also seemed somewhat scared, understandably, given the charges he's facing."

Vega has a court hearing scheduled for May 29, while the mother's next appearance in court is set for Friday.

Calderon's sister told the local news station, "She's one of the best mothers that I know," and insisted that her sister was at work on the day the children died.

During an initial probable cause court hearing, Calderon had an emotional outburst. She reportedly said, "You were the last one with my kids when they f*****g died. You're making me look like I'm a bad person. I was at work when they f*****g died."

Calderon's aunt, Sarah Calderon, shared her thoughts with local news stations, expressing, "I'm just really disappointed, it hurts - it really does break my heart. They need to both be held accountable because, even if I don't think she would physically harm them, the babies weren't even taken care of."

How did the Internet react to the deaths of twin sisters?

Upon learning about the deaths of twin sisters, who suffered neglect to the extent of malnourishment, displaying discolored skin and signs of bleeding, many voiced their opinions, with some questioning the parents' cruelty.

One claimed, ”How sickening. Eliminate the 2 that created these precious babies. Rest in Peace, beautiful girls.”

Another said, “Such a shame! There are so many good wholesome loving childless couples who would have loved to adopt those beautiful babies!”

A user wrote, “Unbelievable!  How could new parents behave like this!  They should never have been allowed to have these poor babies. Sadly this would never have been anticipated by their medical helpers.” [sic]

Another user wrote, “Pure Evil manifests itself in what should only be pure love. These incidents appear to often on the media.”[sic]

One more user said, “It hurts so much that people who are able to have children treat their children like this. If you don't want your baby, let someone else who is desperate for a child keep it.”
