AOC calls ICE ‘anti-civilian force’ after shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis
AOC: This has now become what we feared most about ICE for a long time—that it would be used as an anti-civilian force with no accountability. At the end of the day, what we saw today was a murder, and murders in cold blood need to be prosecuted. pic.twitter.com/9J0kvMEZGw

WASHINGTON, DC: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez publicly condemned the shooting of Renee Nicole Good, calling it a "murder" that must be prosecuted. Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident, was fatally shot by an ICE agent on Wednesday, January 7, in an incident that has drawn widespread outrage.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the shooting occurred after Good allegedly attempted to strike an immigration officer with her vehicle. The incident took place just a few blocks from Good’s home and has sparked strong reactions from community members and her family.
AOC denounces ICE agent’s actions and calls for accountability
Ocasio-Cortez described the shooting as "murder" and said, "Murders in cold blood need to be prosecuted." She added, "This has now become what we feared most about ICE for a long time—that it would be used as an anti-civilian force with no accountability."
She noted the proximity of the shooting to the site where George Floyd was killed, stating, "We've seen what happened to this woman just a few blocks away from where George Floyd was murdered."
Ocasio-Cortez called the shooting a criminal act: "What we saw today was a criminal murder. A woman was shot in the head while trying to flee, and this is every American's worst nightmare of their government turning into a tyranny."
When asked if the officer should be arrested, she reiterated, "I think what we saw was murder today and it needs to be prosecuted." Regarding claims that Good was attempting to use her vehicle as a weapon, Ocasio-Cortez said, "Their editorializing of this event to justify a public murder is disgusting."
AOC’s stance on ICE and DHS response to shooting
Ocasio-Cortez has long called for abolishing ICE. In a 2025 fundraising email, she wrote, "I believe that ICE, an agency formed in 2003 during the Patriot Act era, is a rogue agency that should not exist." She first championed the movement during her 2018 congressional campaign, opposing Trump’s immigration policies.
In February 2025, she hosted a "Know Your Rights with ICE" webinar to guide individuals on interactions with ICE agents, prompting calls for a Department of Justice investigation.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem addressed the incident, stating that Good allegedly "was trying to block officers with her vehicle, had been harassing them throughout the day, and attempted to run a law enforcement officer over" before she was shot. Noem added that the officer was struck by the vehicle, hospitalized, and released, and noted that immigration enforcement recently made over 1,500 arrests in Minnesota.
