NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez drew attention on Sunday, April 5, after she was seen enjoying a Yankees game from a suite while thousands of federal workers continued to struggle without pay due to the ongoing government shutdown.

The visit, which came as workers approached nearly six weeks without salaries, quickly became a talking point online and elsewhere.

The congresswoman, often described as a key member of the progressive 'Squad,' appeared relaxed and cheerful during the outing. Social media posts showed her smiling, posing for selfies, and interacting with fans at the game between the Yankees and the Miami Marlins.

AOC’s Yankees outing draws attention amid shutdown

Photos circulating online showed Ocasio-Cortez dressed casually in a Yankees cap and a navy and white striped sweater.

Fans who met her appeared thrilled, with one writing on X, “I met @AOC I’m never going to fail,” alongside a selfie taken at the stadium.

The game was delayed for more than three-and-a-half hours due to rain, but that didn’t stop the congresswoman from engaging with attendees.

According to sources, she watched the game from one of the suites instead of sitting with the general spectators.

“She was not sitting down in the bleachers with her constituents,” a source said, noting the contrast between her seating and that of regular attendees.

Federal workers remain unpaid as shutdown drags on

The optics of the outing come at a sensitive time. Tens of thousands of federal workers have gone without pay for 48 days, making this one of the longest partial government shutdowns in history.

Among those affected are employees from the Department of Homeland Security, including FEMA workers, members of the US Coast Guard, and staff from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

Many of these workers have continued to perform their duties despite not receiving paychecks.

Meanwhile, members of Congress, including Ocasio-Cortez, are currently in their second week of paid vacation.

Lawmakers continue to receive their salaries, reported at $174,000 annually, while the shutdown affects federal employees nationwide.

AOC’s presence doesn’t bring luck to Yankees

Despite the excitement surrounding her appearance, the outing did not result in a win for the home team.

The Yankees, often called the 'Bombers,' lost the game 7-6 after surrendering a three-run lead.

The loss added another layer to the day, as focus remained divided between the game and Ocasio-Cortez’s appearance.

The contrast between lawmakers enjoying leisure time and federal employees struggling without income has fueled debate.

Other members of Congress have reportedly spent their break traveling or attending events, including trips to Las Vegas and participation in No Kings protests in Los Angeles, further demonstrating how lawmakers are using their time away from Washington.
