NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Ahead of New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s visit to the White House to meet President Donald Trump as he prepares to take office, the upcoming event is drawing attention.
Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, has shared her thoughts on the meeting, signaling trust in Mamdani’s judgment and expressing hope for a better outcome for New York.
AOC expresses trust in Zohran Mamdani ahead of Trump meeting
On Thursday, November 20, when a reporter asked Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about her expectations for the meeting, the congresswoman said, “We’ll see.”
“Obviously, the mayor-elect is going to be preparing for his inauguration,” she said. “Of course, he’s indicated that he’s willing to sit down with anybody and everybody. So we’ll see.”
When asked whether there were any policy issues the mayor-elect should raise with President Donald Trump, she said, “I think we let Zohran lead. He’s been elected to lead New York City. I trust him as the mayor-elect, he’ll do what he thinks is best for the city of New York.”
“We’ll see how it goes,” she added.
Trump confirms first White House meeting with Zohran Mamdani
Despite previous critical comments and election-related remarks, President Donald Trump last week hinted at plans to meet Zohran Mamdani in Washington, and on Wednesday announced that he will meet with Mamdani at the White House this week.
“Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran ‘Kwame’ Mamdani, has asked for a meeting. We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Further details to follow,” the president said.
The meeting marks the first encounter between Trump and Mamdani since the Democratic socialist’s victory in New York’s mayoral race earlier this month.
Trump and Zohran Mamdani trade sharp words after NYC mayoral win
After winning the mayoral race by defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in a historic and closely watched contest, Zohran Mamdani addressed Donald Trump directly during his victory speech and said, “To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”
“So Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up!” Mamdani added, drawing loud cheers from the audience.
In response, Trump called Mamdani’s speech “very angry,” saying it was directed at him and that the newly elected NYC mayor “should be nice” to him.
“I thought it was a very angry speech, certainly angry toward me, and I think he should be nice to me. He’s off to a bad start,” Trump said. When asked about the part where Mamdani told him to “turn up the volume,” Trump called the remark “very dangerous.”
