WASHINGTON, DC: In a recent chat with Hamilton College president Steven Tepper, former President Barack Obama dropped a surprisingly raw confession about his marriage to Michelle Obama.

Obama shared that he’s been putting in significant effort to repair the strain his two presidential terms placed on his marriage with Michelle.

Barack Obama gets candid about rocky marriage years

“I was in a deep deficit with my wife,” Obama, now 63, admitted during the talk, according to the Daily Beast. “So I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things.” You can read the entire coversation here:

This isn’t the first time he's opened up about the personal toll the presidency took on his life. In a 2023 interview, Obama openly said that life in the White House put strain on their marriage and that stepping away from that pressure helped them begin to reconnect.

“It sure helps to be out of the White House and to have a little more time with her,” he said, adding that Michelle has been “forgiving” in ways many wouldn’t be.

Michelle Obama has never sugarcoated the truth about marriage. In fact, in late 2022, she stunned audiences by revealing on Revolt TV, she “couldn’t stand” her husband for nearly a decade when they were raising daughters Malia and Sasha and juggling intense career demands.

“This isn’t being catty,” Michelle clarified, “It’s just real. Marriage isn’t 50/50 — ever, ever.” She explained, “There are times I’m 70, he’s 30. There are times he’s 60, (I’m) 40. But guess what? Ten years — we’ve been married 30 — I would take 10 bad years over 30. It’s just how you look at it.”

In an interview from April 2023, she candidly discussed her relationship, explaining that she chooses to be transparent about marriage “because marriage is hard, and a lot of young people quit on marriage over things that are just a part of the commitment.”

Married since October 1992, the Obamas have recently found themselves at the center of divorce speculation. The rumors began circulating in January after Obama was seen attending several high-profile political events alone, including former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and President Trump’s inauguration.

Barack Obama’s candid comments about the ups and downs of his marriage to Michelle Obama have stirred a wave of emotional and opinionated reactions across social media. The former president’s openness about the challenges they’ve faced especially during and after their time in the White House has sparked both admiration and criticism.

“I’m surprised any marriage can survive the White House. Mrs. Obama seems pretty well grounded, but on the dynamics of a long marriage, it’s incredibly challenging,” one person wrote.

Another shared admiration for their honesty and strength, “Good marriages don't quit when the journey gets tough. I and millions of others around the world admire Barack and Michelle. It's a damn shame when a decent family is despised for their decency.”

“I guess she doesn't appreciate what a privilege it is to be a First Lady,” one user remarked, while another speculated, “She has not been supportive of him in attending formal events with him for some time now... Storm clouds are gathering.”

“We knew all this already. So they had some slightly rocky years, so what. Anyone saying they are happy all the time is lying,” one person wrote.
