Michelle Obama says she married husband Barack when he wasn't financially sound

During the Wednesday, April 2 episode of her 'IMO' podcast, Michelle Obama and her brother-co-host, Craig Robinson, discussed money in relationships.

Robinson asked his sister, "Would you be attracted to a guy who’s not financially sound when you meet him?" and Michelle replied, "Uh, I married one."

She then explained, "I left my corporate firm when I met Barack. I had somebody who was like, 'I got your back. The risks you think you’re taking, they aren’t that crazy, and I’m here to help you.'"

She added, "That’s when I said, 'I would rather have that in a partner than a higher income. I would rather have somebody who is ready to do some hard things with me.' But that meant I had to be ready to do some hard things with him."

Meanwhile, Robinson said that "women in general" are not like her when she met Barack at a law firm in 1989 in her mid-20s, and added that many are looking for "a good catch".

However, Michelle argued that they should not generalize women and agreed that some aren’t "looking deep enough" and instead look at "superficial" traits when dating.

As per Business Insider, Michelle was 25 and Barack was 28 when the two met at the Sidley Austin LLP law firm in Chicago. The former POTUS asked Michelle on a date within a month of meeting, and they got engaged in 1991.

They got married in 1992 and welcomed their first daughter, Malia, in 1998, and their second daughter, Sasha, in 2001.

Michelle Obama 'checked out' of DC life

In January 2025, a Beltway insider said that Michelle Obama has been “checked out” of DC life ever since the couple left the White House back in January 2017, according to Page Six.

The high society source added that it has led to "certainly nonstop chatter that Michelle is fed up with the political circus, and pretending everything is OK with Barack all the time."

"What this will all lead to is to be revealed in time," the source mentioned.

According to the outlet, it was reported that the Obamas’ primary residence is in the Kalorama neighborhood of DC. Michelle is said to spend a lot of time on Martha’s Vineyard, where the couple own an $11.75 million ocean-front compound.

A different insider confirmed that Michelle is "mostly Martha’s Vineyard, never in DC", and several others added that they had been on the island without Barack and appeared "happy and content", per Page Six.

Interestingly, the Obamas were last publicly seen together in Los Angeles in December 2024 at the trendy Hollywood Italian eatery Mother Wolf.
