Barbra Streisand shared her message in an open letter on Instagram, describing America as “in deep trouble under Trump’s regime.” The Oscar-winning actress and singer addressed Jane Fonda directly, expressing concern about what she described as a serious threat to free expression.

"Dear Jane,” Streisand wrote. “We are indeed in deep trouble under Trump’s regime. The entertainment community has always had strong and powerful artists standing up for democracy and freedom of speech. Our voices are always stronger together.”

Streisand went on to compare the current political climate to the 1950s, writing, “I’m proud to be part of our community and this committee in 2025, as sad as this is, to be reliving the 1950s. Jane, I appreciate your continued activism and voice in these scary times. With hope for the future, Barbra.”

According to a report by Breitbart News, the Committee for the First Amendment was originally formed in the 1940s to counter blacklisting, censorship, and political persecution during the McCarthy era.

The group disbanded after its initial campaign, but Jane Fonda is now leading efforts to revive it, with supporters arguing that Donald Trump and his administration are once again pressuring critics.

Streisand’s open letter was written in support of Fonda, who said she was inspired by her father, Henry Fonda. Henry Fonda was one of the original members of the committee, and Jane Fonda said she hopes to bring the group back into the national spotlight.

In a strongly worded statement, the Committee for the First Amendment said, “The federal government is once again engaged in a coordinated campaign to silence critics in the government, the media, the judiciary, academia, and the entertainment industry.”

The statement called for solidarity across professions and political divides, concluding: “We know there is power in solidarity and strength in numbers. We will stand together fiercely to defend free speech and expression from this assault. This is not a partisan issue.”
