During the interview, Chelsea Handler described going to the bathroom at Fonda's house and contemplating how to react to what just transpired.
She recalled, "I went to the bathroom mirror at her house and looked at myself, and I was like, 'Okay, you have two choices in how you're going to handle this.'"
She continued, "'You could be defensive, and that just means she's right. Or you can take it in and realize that she did not have to sit down and take the time to tell you this.'"
Notably, Handler reflected on the encounter and acknowledged that Fonda's criticism was an act of love.
She said, "She could have just avoided me for the rest of our lives and never hung out with me again. But she set an example for me that day. That was an act of love."
Moreover, the interaction would eventually serve as a crucial moment in Handler's journey to becoming more self-aware and considerate of her behavior, per the outlet.
Chelsea Handler admits therapy helped in shaping her personality
This incident with Fonda was not the only reason for her growth. Chelsea Handler admitted that therapy has also played a crucial role in shaping her into a more forgiving and less reactive personality, per the outlet.
Handler mentioned, "My confidence and my bravado and my tough exterior that worked for me so well and for so long in the years of Chelsea Lately—it's like gas that you run out of."
She said, "That anger and that drive, that got me to be really successful. But there comes a time in your life where whatever works for you stops working for you, and all of a sudden you have to take a look at what you haven't examined, which is usually your inner life and what happened to you as a child."
Moreover, Handler's introspection also impacted her approach to relationships. She added that she no longer sees breakups as the end of the world.
She explained, "It's not a big deal if something doesn't work out. If the guy I'm dating breaks up with me, it's really not the end of the world. I'm a tree now - I'm unshakeable."
