LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA: Benny Gutierrez, a 14-year-old boy, was tragically shot dead while painting over gang graffiti in El Dorado Park, California.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday night, May 13, when shots were fired from a car in the park's parking lot, hitting the young teen who was with several friends at the time, officials informed KTLA.

Heartbroken family learns of Benny Gutierrez's death through social media

In a devastating turn of events, Benny's family learned about his untimely death six hours later through social media platforms.

“My heart dropped because that’s my baby,” Benny’s older sister, Crysta Gutierrez said. “I just couldn’t believe it because this pain is so unbearable.”

Rosalie Gutierrez, a single mother and social worker, recounted that she had seen her son just an hour before he was fatally shot. “He was funny, he was outgoing, he was loving, he loved his sisters,” she mourned.  

Family vows to hold responsible suspect accountable

Despite their grief, Benny's family is determined to seek justice for their beloved son. Benny's mother directed a poignant message to her son's killer, emphasizing the irreplaceable loss they inflicted upon her and her family.

“You took a child’s life. My world was him,” said Rosalie. “He was my baby, and I was dedicated to him. So, if you’re hearing this, you’re going to get caught and we are going to get justice.”

Vigils held to honor Benny Gutierrez's memory

In the wake of Benny's tragic passing, his friends and family have come together each night in El Dorado Park to honor his memory.

Benny, standing at 5 feet 10 inches and weighing 200 pounds, was described as a large, football-playing teddy bear.

“People thought he was this tough guy on the outside, but on the inside, he was just this little kid that was scared of everything,” said his sister Crysta.

“I know Benny looks big for his age, but he’s just a baby,” his cousin, Cindy Estrada, fondly remembered him. “He’s just funny. … He’s really family-oriented. He’s not a gangster or anything like that.”

GoFundMe campaign launched to cover Benny Gutierrez's funeral expenses

To support Benny's family during this difficult time, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to cover funeral expenses. 

As investigations into Benny's tragic death continue, authorities are diligently collecting evidence to identify and apprehend the perpetrator. Despite the absence of arrests thus far, Benny's family remains hopeful that justice will prevail.
