DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA: Progressive Senator Bernie Sanders delivered a fiery address in Durham, North Carolina, on Friday, warning Democrats of what he described as the dangers of ‘Trumpism.’ Speaking to a crowd of more than 1,000 supporters, Sanders urged voters to push back against Republican policies and what he called attempts to divide Americans by targeting minority communities.

The speech is part of Sanders’ ongoing nationwide mobilization efforts to support progressive candidates and energize Democratic voters ahead of upcoming elections.

Sanders frames ‘Trumpism’ as a historical, harmful political strategy

Addressing Democratic activists and local officials, Sanders drew parallels between Trumpism and tactics employed by demagogues throughout history. He argued that political leaders have long exploited public anxieties by blaming marginalized groups for economic and social challenges.

“Let me just also say this that it is imperative that we continue to do everything that we can to stop Trumpism,” Sanders said. “It is doing what demagogues throughout history have always done — Trump didn’t invent this playbook.”

He cited historical examples, including authoritarian regimes in Germany in the 1930s, and emphasized that today’s scapegoated minority in the United States is undocumented immigrants. “Most come here seeking opportunity, much like immigrants in previous generations, including my own family,” he added.

Sanders calls out Trump’s 'authoritarianism’

“We’re here in Durham to say loudly and clearly that we believe in democracy,” Sanders told the crowd. “Trump is an authoritarian. Trump is busy giving huge tax breaks to billionaires and throwing working people off their health care.”.

“But Trump, like all demagogues, sees an opportunity to divide us up,” Sanders said. “The major point I want to make today is we have got to do exactly the opposite of what Trump is trying to do. He wants to divide us up. We got to bring our people together.”
