Trump warns Republicans of election ‘consequences’ for opposing Canada tariffs
WASHINGTON,DC: President Donald Trump has threatened Republican lawmakers with political consequences for opposing his administration’s tariffs on US trading partners.
His warning came shortly after six House Republicans voted to repeal tariffs on Canada, signaling tensions within the party. Trump emphasized that Republicans who oppose his tariff policies could face repercussions in both primary and general elections.
Any Republican, in the House or the Senate, that votes against TARIFFS will seriously suffer the consequences come Election time, and that includes Primaries! Our Trade Deficit has been reduced by 78%, the Dow Jones has just hit 50,000, and the S&P, 7,000, all Numbers that were…

Trump defends tariffs as economic and national security tools
Trump addressed the recent House vote on his tariffs in a Truth Social post Wednesday evening. He wrote, “Any Republican, in the House or the Senate, that votes against TARIFFS will seriously suffer the consequences come Election time, and that includes Primaries!”
This statement followed the decision by six House Republicans to join Democrats in supporting a resolution to repeal the tariffs on Canada, a measure sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks, the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
The Republicans who supported the resolution were Reps. Don Bacon, Kevin Kiley, Thomas Massie, Jeff Hurd, Brian Fitzpatrick and Dan Newhouse and Jared Goldman was the sole Democrat to vote against the measure.
Trump doubled down on his justification for tariffs, highlighting their role in negotiating with trading partners. He wrote, “In addition, TARIFFS have given us Great National Security because the mere mention of the word has Countries agreeing to our strongest wishes."
He continued, "TARIFFS have given us Economic and National Security, and no Republican should be responsible for destroying this privilege.”
Democrats criticize Republicans’ support of Tariffs
The Democratic Governors Association also responded to the vote, criticizing Republicans for backing Trump’s tariffs. Communications director Sam Newton specifically highlighted House Republican candidates running for governor who supported the tariffs.
Newton stated, “As Americans continue to bear the brunt of high costs on everything from housing to groceries, every congressional Republican running for governor voted to defend Trump’s deeply unpopular, cost-raising tariffs on Canada.”
Newton referenced the recent gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia in 2025, noting that Republican candidates were decisively defeated.
“Republican candidates got blown out of the water in New Jersey and Virginia in 2025 because Americans are tired of their disastrous economic agenda,” Newton said.
She warned that the latest vote would increase economic pressures on American families and businesses, writing, “Today’s vote only worsens the pain American families and businesses are already feeling and helps ensure the headwinds facing Republicans are going to be even worse in governors’ races across the country in 2026.”
