WASHINGTON, DC: Bernie Sanders sharply criticized Donald Trump for his recent comments on Iran, calling them dangerous and irresponsible. He also urged Congress to act immediately, saying lawmakers must not allow such statements to go unchecked.

Sanders’ response came after Trump escalated tensions with a stark warning during the ongoing conflict. Trump claimed that “a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again” if Iran failed to agree to a deal, including reopening the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

Addressing the broader situation, the United States–Iran conflict has now entered its fifth week and is approaching the sixth. The initial strike in this escalation occurred on February 28.

Bernie Sanders calls for urgent Congress action

On Wednesday, April 8, Sanders spoke out on X, warning people not to ignore Trump’s repeated extreme remarks. He said, "It is very easy to become accustomed to Trump’s ravings, and laugh them off. That’s a dangerous thing to do."

He then explained why he believes Trump’s words should be taken seriously and not dismissed. He said, "When Trump states: “A whole civilization will die tonight." He is threatening to commit a massive destruction which is not at all good."

Finally, Sanders called for immediate action from lawmakers to stop the situation from getting worse. He said, "We can’t allow that to happen. Congress must end this war NOW."

It was not only Sanders who criticized Trump. Chuck Schumer also strongly condemned the statement and warned Republicans about supporting such actions.

He said, "This is an extremely sick person. Each Republican who refuses to join us in voting against this wanton war of choice owns every consequence of whatever the hell this is."

Trump warns of Iran escalation consequences

Trump intensified his stance on Iran by warning of severe consequences if a deal is not reached. He said a “whole civilization” could be lost and “never to be brought back again” if Iranian officials fail to meet his deadline to end the war.

Sharing a message on Tuesday, April 7, Trump described what he believes could happen if the situation continues to escalate. He wrote, "A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will."

Trump went on to suggest that the situation could lead to a major political shift in Iran, expressing a mix of warning and speculation about the outcome. He wrote, "However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?"

"We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!" he concluded.
