Biden begins radiation therapy as treatment for ‘aggressive’ prostate cancer enters new phase

WASHINGTON, DC: Former President Joe Biden has entered a new phase of treatment for an aggressive form of prostate cancer that was diagnosed earlier this year, his spokesperson said on October 11.
“As part of a treatment plan for prostate cancer, Biden is currently undergoing radiation therapy and hormone treatment,” the spokesperson said, noting that the former president has already been taking oral hormone medication.
NBC News reported, quoting a source familiar with his care, that the radiation treatment is expected to last about five weeks, marking a new stage in his ongoing battle with the disease.

Biden’s Mohs surgery came weeks before new cancer treatment
Just last month, Biden, 82, underwent Mohs surgery, a procedure used to treat skin cancer. A large bandage was seen on his forehead during public appearances.
His physician later confirmed in a memo that “all cancerous tissue was successfully removed” and that “no further treatment is required.”
Biden had revealed in May that doctors had found an aggressive prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones. His office said at the time that he was exploring multiple treatment options to ensure “effective management” of the illness.

Biden shares emotional post on X after cancer diagnosis
In a heartfelt post on X following his diagnosis, Biden wrote: “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”
Medical experts told NBC News at the time that, given the advanced stage of his cancer, the illness may have gone undiagnosed for several years. Men Biden’s age are typically not screened for prostate cancer, with the American Cancer Society recommending screening mainly for men in their 50s and 60s.

It remains unclear whether Biden underwent prostate screening during his last medical exam as president in 2024.
Biden’s office says he is ‘doing well’ despite treatment
Despite the intensity of his current treatments, Biden’s office says the former president is “doing well.” He turns 83 next month.
While in office in 2023, Biden had a small cancerous skin lesion removed during a routine physical exam, but doctors at the time said no additional treatment was necessary.
Biden left the White House in January after suspending his re-election campaign late last year and endorsing Kamala Harris for the 2024 race.
His final months in office were marked by questions about his age and mental fitness, claims that both Biden and his family have consistently rejected.
