WILMINGTON, DELAWARE: As President Joe Biden retreated to his Rehoboth Beach home in Delaware on Friday, August 9, critics were quick to voice their discontent on social media.

The controversial getaway followed a week marked by major global and domestic challenges. With only one public event on his schedule for the entire week, Biden's decision to take time off has been met with sharp criticism from opponents.

The Republican National Committee's (RNC) Research X account was quick to condemn the president. "Biden—who held just one public event this week—is currently lounging on the beach in Delaware," they posted while sharing a clip of Biden relaxing at the beach. "He has spent 40% of his entire presidency on vacation... Who is running the country?"

A week of global tensions

Joe Biden's retreat to Delaware comes on the heels of a week fraught with international unrest. One of the most pressing concerns is the escalating situation in the Middle East, where the threat of an Iranian counterattack on Israel looms large.

This comes after the recent killings of senior Hezbollah and Hamas officials in Lebanon and Iran, events that have heightened the risk of a broader conflict in the region.

Meanwhile, in Eastern Europe, Russia declared a "federal-level" emergency in its Kursk region, which borders Ukraine. The announcement came after one of the largest surprise attacks by Ukrainian forces since the war began over two years ago. Reports indicate that around 1,000 Ukrainian troops have entered Russian territory, where intense fighting is ongoing.

While global tensions simmer, the US economy has also faced uncertainty. The past week saw significant volatility on Wall Street, beginning with a global market sell-off on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 2.6%, the Nasdaq Composite fell 3.43%, and the S&P 500 declined by 3%, Fox News reported.

Although Thursday's jobless claims report offered a glimmer of hope by easing fears of an impending downturn, some experts warn that this may only be the beginning of a more profound economic "reckoning."

Stephanie Pomboy, president of Macromavens, voiced her concerns on Fox Business’s 'Mornings with Maria', explaining, "There's a lot of pain ahead of us, both for the economy and this reckoning for the markets that have been really behind the curve, like the Fed."

Criticism of Joe Biden's vacation

Against a backdrop of global and domestic turmoil, President Joe Biden’s decision to relax at the beach did not go unnoticed, with several critics slamming him on social media.

"Ukrainians have invaded Russia and are in Kursk. Iran is working on a major retaliation upon Israel. And here lounges Biden. What an embarrassment," one posted on X.

"That’s because he’s got other people running the country. Considering he’s using our tax dollars to go on vacation for 40% of his career," another user wrote.

"This is a joke! Biden has spent 40% of his presidency on vacation while the country falls apart. Inflation, crime, border crisis - who cares? He's too busy relaxing on the beach. Unbelievable dereliction of duty. Incompetent leadership. America deserves so much better than this," another added.

"And his official schedule for next week? Stay in Delaware, two conference calls, and call it a week. Two calls is all Biden is doing next week. The world is on fire! Who's in charge???" read a comment.

"It could be 100% of the time and nothing would be different. Biden’s been an empty suit over three years," someone else insisted.

"I look at it this way, he has done so much damage with 60% of his time. I wish he spent more time at the beach and maybe our country wouldn’t be the s**t show it is," another offered.

Amidst the criticism, Biden’s only public event of the week was a brief appearance at the White House on Thursday, where he hosted the Texas Rangers, the reigning World Series champions. The event was light-hearted, with Biden delivering a few remarks about the team’s championship season.

The Rangers’ manager, Bruce Bochy, presented the president with a customized jersey and a pair of cowboy boots, moments that were met with laughter and applause.

However, the levity of the event was contrasted by an awkward moment when Biden, after receiving the gifts, asked, "All right, what am I doing now?" The guests and players laughed, but the moment served as a reminder of the scrutiny the president faces regarding his age and mental acuity.

Looking ahead: Kamala Harris takes the lead

As Joe Biden’s presidency enters its final months, the focus has shifted to Vice President Kamala Harris, who has become the face of the Democratic Party's campaign efforts.

The White House announced on Friday morning that Biden and Harris will make their first joint campaign trip next week since he announced his decision to step down from the 2024 presidential race. The pair will travel to Maryland to discuss the administration’s efforts to lower costs for Americans, a critical issue as inflation continues to weigh heavily on voters’ minds.

Harris, the first female, Black, and South Asian vice president in US history, has already begun to energize the Democratic base with a series of rallies and fundraising events. Her ascent to the top of the ticket follows Biden’s withdrawal after a disastrous debate against former president Donald Trump, which amplified concerns about Biden's ability to continue leading the country.

In contrast to Biden’s dwindling profile, Harris has been actively working to cement her position and build momentum as the November election approaches, CBS News reported.
