NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Comedian Bill Maher shared his take on Hunter Biden's federal gun trial during the opening monologue of his show 'Real Time with Bill Maher' on Friday, June 7, reported The Wrap.

According to CBS News, the trial follows the indictment of the son of incumbent Joe Biden back in September 2023, after a proposed plea deal with federal prosecutors became undone. He stands accused of illegally purchasing and possessing a gun while being addicted to drugs, something that is prohibited by federal law.

Hunter Biden is currently facing three charges, two of which are related to the purchase of the gun and one related to its possession for 11 days.

Bill Maher's take on Hunter Biden's trial

“The big news this week is Hunter Biden’s trial — let’s get right to that — means absolutely f**king nothing, but let’s get right to it because oh they may be obsessed with this," began Maher, taking a dig at Republicans.

He joked that following the conviction of former President Donald Trump, the attitude of his supporters was along the lines of “we’re gonna take down Hunter Biden, and the Democrats are like, ‘knock yourself, out we barely care about Joe Biden'."

“But this trial is all about one thing in America, which is very important: You cannot mix drugs and guns,” he quipped.

Maher went over the details of the case, stating, "(Hunter) was literally on crack and buying a gun, he almost had the pipe in his head, okay? The prosecutor gets up and says no one is above the law in this country. It doesn’t matter who you are, or what your name is. Republicans stood up and fist-pumped and went ‘yeah!’ and then they went, ‘Oh, wait.’"

He jibed at how fast Republicans switched sides to be in favor of felony convictions, stating, "Usually to change this drastically in the space of two months, hormones are involved."

"But if Hunter Biden does get convicted, this will be a historic first. It’ll be the first time Republicans ever objected to someone buying a gun,” he added.

Hunter Biden's defense strategy

Attorneys for Hunter Biden argued in a Wilmington, Delaware, courtroom that the prosecutors have failed to present evidence that Hunter Biden was actually using drugs in the 11 days he owned the gun, reported AP News.

“It was only after the gun was thrown away and the ensuing stress ... that the government was able to then find the same type of evidence of his use (e.g., photos, use of drug lingo) that he relapsed with drugs,” stated defense lawyer Abbe Lowell.

In addition to casting doubt on the prosecution's witnesses and coming up with explanations for Hunter Biden's withdrawal of large amounts of cash at the time, which the prosecution implied was to pay for drugs, the defense also called the accused's daughter Naomi to the stand on Friday.

She testified about visiting her father at a rehab facility months before the purchase of the gun and shared her experience with him in detail to illustrate that Hunter had been clean during that period. However, the testimony was crossed by the prosecution, who also introduced personal texts between father and daughter as evidence.

The defense has not ruled out calling more witnesses, but it is yet unclear who that might be.
