Billie Eilish shares posts calling for ‘Abolish ICE’ amid outrage over Minneapolis shooting
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: Singer and songwriter Billie Eilish has spoken out amid protests targeting the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which has faced renewed scrutiny following a fatal shooting involving an ICE agent in Minneapolis.
Eilish reshared a series of Instagram Stories condemning the agency and urging followers to take political action. Her posts referenced both the shooting and the broader debate around ICE’s enforcement practices, as demonstrations intensified in Minnesota following the death of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good on Wednesday, January 7.
Billie Eilish responds to Minneapolis ICE shooting
On Friday, January 9, two days after Good was fatally shot during a federal enforcement operation, Eilish reshared multiple posts originally created by poet and activist Sonia Guinansaca.
Guinansaca’s posts criticized ICE and included a caption reading, “Abolish ICE!!!! No one should be dying/murder at the hands of ICE. From Renee Nicole Good, to Keith Porter, to Silverio Villegas Gonzalez, to the many undocumented migrants dying at the hands of ICE and in detention centers.”
One of the graphics Eilish reposted labeled ICE as a “federally funded and supported t*******t group,” accusing the agency of tearing families apart, terrorizing communities, and killing innocent people.
Another post listed the names of 32 individuals who reportedly died while in ICE custody over the past year, accompanied by the message, “This needs to end today. Abolish ICE.”
A third repost featured a call script tied to the Minneapolis shooting, urging US citizens to contact their senators and congressional representatives. The message demanded that ICE be defunded and that the officer involved in the shooting be arrested and charged immediately.
Eilish also reshared a video criticizing Fox News host Jesse Watters' on-air comments about the incident. The creator accused Watters of reducing the victim to identity traits while failing to condemn ICE’s actions or address the circumstances of the shooting itself.
Trump administration defends ICE agent actions
Federal officials, including the Department of Homeland Security, President Donald Trump, and Vice President JD Vance, defended the ICE agent involved, claiming that Good attempted to run over officers and that the shooting was an act of self-defense.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described the incident as justified, characterizing Good’s actions as “an act of domestic terrorism.” She also said she was not opposed to deploying additional federal agents to Minneapolis if protests continued.
However, The New York Times reported that its analysis of footage from three camera angles suggested the vehicle was moving away from, not toward, the federal officer when shots were fired, raising questions about the official account.
Eilish has previously criticized Trump-era immigration policies and law enforcement tactics. She publicly endorsed Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election and has repeatedly condemned ICE raids in Los Angeles, her hometown.
Prior to the Minneapolis incident, the Grammy winner had shared footage showing Homeland Security agents in military-style gear conducting enforcement actions at MacArthur Park, a public space frequented by families from one of Los Angeles’ largest immigrant communities.
Her latest reposts added celebrity visibility to a rapidly escalating political dispute, as activists, lawmakers, and federal agencies continued to clash over the shooting and ICE’s broader role in immigration enforcement.
