Billionaire George Soros and family contributed $71K to NY Attorney General Letitia James' campaigns
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Campaign finance records show billionaire philanthropist George Soros and members of his family have contributed more than $71,000 to New York Attorney General Letitia James’ political campaigns since 2019.
The donations include recent contributions ahead of James’ next re-election bid and come as she remains a prominent legal adversary of President Donald Trump.
The filings also highlight indirect financial links through progressive political organizations supported by Soros. Neither James’ office nor Soros’ representatives have commented on the latest disclosures yet.
Soros family donations and ties to progressive organizations
According to state campaign finance records, Soros and his family members have donated a total exceeding $71,000 to Letitia James’ campaign accounts over multiple election cycles.
The most recent contributions include $18,000 from Soros in July 2024 and $13,000 from his daughter-in-law, Jennifer Soros, in May. Records show an additional $40,000 in donations dating back to 2019.
Beyond direct contributions, Soros has also supported organizations aligned with James’ political priorities.
His Open Society Foundation has provided $23.7 million since 2016 to the Working Families Party through its fundraising arm, Working Families Organization Inc, according to filings.
Soros family members have also donated approximately $865,000 directly to the New York branch of the party since 2018.
Michael Henry, a Republican candidate planning to challenge James in 2026, criticized the donations.
“George Soros has spent years financing the radical left’s most extreme projects, and the outcome is almost always the same: instability and disorder that is destroying our state,” Henry said.
He added, “When the same donor who funds chaos underwrites New York’s top law enforcement office, the results speak for themselves.”
Legal battles and political scrutiny
During her 2018 campaign, Leititia James pledged to investigate Trump’s business practices, later filing a civil fraud case alleging that Trump had inflated his net worth over several decades.
While the case remains ongoing, Trump scored a significant legal victory in August when a state appellate court overturned fines exceeding $500 million that had been imposed as part of the proceedings.
James also faced legal scrutiny after being indicted on mortgage fraud charges related to a property she owns in Virginia.
She pleaded not guilty, and the case was dismissed in November without going to trial. Subsequent efforts by the Department of Justice to refile charges have so far been unsuccessful.
Trump has repeatedly accused Soros of orchestrating or supporting legal actions against him by Democratic prosecutors, including James and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
Soros has also reportedly been linked to Bragg’s political rise through indirect and direct donations, including $1 million given to Color of Change’s political action committee, which supported Bragg’s 2021 campaign, as well as more than $43,000 donated directly to Bragg since 2021.
