NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former President Donald Trump hailed South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem amidst the ongoing controversy about her killing her 14-month-old dog for being aggressive.

In an interview with Wisconsin's Spectrum News 1 on Tuesday, May 7, the GOP presumptive nominee said he likes Noem "a lot," adding that she went through "rough days" after the dog-killing story in her book came out, according to ABC News.

"She had a rough couple of days. I will say that," Trump said.

The Republican, who is a top contender for Trump's running mate picks, in her new book 'No Going Back: The Truth on What's Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward,' narrated how she shot and killed her dog, Cricket, for attacking her neighbor's chickens.

Trump dodges question on Kristi Noem's VP chances

Despite Noem's name being on the top of Trump's potential VP pick list, the ex-president refused to comment on the possibility of her prospects.

"I like her a lot," the White House hopeful said, acknowledging her support from the beginning. "I don't want to comment on anybody on the list," he added.

The South Dakota Governor was present at the recent Republican donor retreat in Palm Beach along with the other vice presidential contenders - Sens Tim Scott, Marco Rubio, and JD Vance.

The Trump ally who was vocal about her desire to be the running mate had earlier said she would take the offer "in a heartbeat."

However, the puppy killing controversy apparently has had an adverse impact on her VP chances, according to sources. Citing a close Trump source, the New York Post reported that Noem no longer had a shot at the possibility because the former president admitted he could not opt for a dog killer as his running mate for "blatantly obvious reasons."

Judge Juan Merchan scheduled Trump's criminal trial to begin on April 15, which would make it the first criminal prosecution of a former American president. Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records last year, which prosecutors say was an effort to hide a potential sex scandal, both before and after the 2016 election. Rolling Stone also indicated her bleak chances to be the VP pick. Some sources said that Trump was "disgusted" by the story and asked, "Why would she do that?" and "What is wrong with her?"

Nevertheless, in a recent interview on CBS 'Face the Nation,' Noem promoted Trump's endorsement of her book while talking about the blurb he wrote for the book.

Trump's blurb read, "Governor Kristi Noem is a tremendous leader, one of the best. This book, it's a winner. It exposes the problems we're having and lays out a fantastic plan to Make America Great Again. You've got to read it!"

Internet slams both Trump and Kristi Noem

Criticizing Trump's approving remarks about Noem after the book controversy, netizens noted that both deserve each other.

A Facebook user labeled the duo "Two peas in a pod." Another remarked, "Of course he likes her she's as crazy as he is."

"Birds of feathers cling together," a third user commented. A fourth response read, "Anything works for Trump if he can get votes, it's not a problem for him. He is the first transgressor of everything."

Someone else wrote, "The standards are lower than the courthouse Donnie has been sitting in." An individual added, "Clearly his low standards of a good person is showing."

"That is certainly expected. He embraces a dog killer. Her dog. The dog she was supposed to protect. Great pair. They think alike. No heart," another user fumed.

One person on X wrote, "Donny, of course you like Kristi a lot, that was the whole point of her broadcasting to the world that she was a heartless puppy murderer: Just your kind of compliant, immoral, MAGA girl. They're a dime a dozen."
