Boy, 7, dies trying to save 4-year-old sister as family of four swept away in flash floods in New Mexico

RUIDOSO, NEW MEXICO: A seven-year-old boy, Sebastian Trotter, and his four-year-old sister, Charlotte Trotter, died after a flash flood overtook a village in New Mexico earlier this week, according to reports.
The two have been identified as the children of US Army soldier Sebastian Trotter. He, along with his wife, Stephanie Trotter-Hopkins, and the two children, were in Ruidoso for a camping trip when they were swept away in a flash flood on Tuesday, July 8.

The children's mother is recovering in the hospital alongside her husband, according to the family and a GoFundMe post.
They also lost two of their dogs, Zeus and Ellie, while a third dog survived the floods.
The Trotter family was staying in an RV when the floods hit, breaking the vehicle apart, according to her family.

Reportedly, Stephanie and her children were swept away in the flood. She was unable to hold onto the children and fight against the current without drowning as the speed of the debris and flood picked up.
Her family wrote in an email, "Little Sebastian died trying to save his little sister. He was BRAVE and calm with no fear, especially for a child who had so much anxiety. Their love was truthfully unbreakable, and their parents showed so so so much love to them, and their loving personalities reflected it."

Meanwhile, the children’s aunt, Tiffanie Wyatt, identified the siblings and noted in a post on Facebook that their father, Sebastian, was also seriously injured in the floods alongside Stephanie.
The seven-year-old loved to play soccer and was a big fan of professional soccer players Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the family said.
Moreover, four-year-old Charlotte loved to give "makeovers" and dance, and loved to sing Taylor Swift songs.
Family raises $195k from GoFundMe in four days
A GoFundMe post to support the family’s bills, mortgage, the children’s funerals and memorials has collected more than $195,000 in just four days.
Meanwhile, photos of the family as well as the damage to the RV, truck, and surrounding areas are included in the description.
"We are raising these funds not only to cover their bills, mortgage, and rehabilitation, but to give our little Sebastian and Charlotte the beautiful farewell they deserve... their funerals, the memorials, the moments of love and remembrance that no amount of sorrow should ever steal from a family," the description of the GoFundMe post read.

It also mentioned, "This is the worst day of our family’s lives. If you can give even a dollar, it will help shoulder some of the burden the parents have and they can focus on healing. If you can share this page, you can help bring hope to Stephanie and Sebastian in their darkest hour. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for standing with us. Any kindness you can offer will mean the world."
Moreover, Stephanie wrote in a statement to the Ruidoso community, provided to The Morning Call, "For everyone reaching out to myself or family… please consider this our story. There is much more trauma within our story, but let us process this on our own terms and give us privacy. Our babies were absolutely everything to us."
