PALM BAY, FLORIDA: Brandon Kapas, 24, unleashed a deadly rampage in Palm Bay, resulting in the fatal shooting of a retired priest, his sister, the suspects' grandfather in the crossfire and the injury of two police officers before Kapas was shot dead by law enforcement.

The chaos began when officers responded to a routine report of a disruptive man causing property damage during a Sunday afternoon, January 28, birthday party.

A gunfight erupted at a residence, leading to the death of Kapas' grandfather, William Kapas, who attempted to intervene, and injuries to two police officers. Police later discovered an arsenal of weapons in Kapas' car, registered to an address in the north of the city.

Upon investigating that address, they found the lifeless bodies of Father Robert Hoeffner, 76, and his sister Sally, both victims of Kapas' deadly spree. Palm Bay Police Chief Mariano Angello commended the officers for preventing a potentially more devastating incident.

He stated, "Our officers did what they were trained to do, and that's neutralize and stop a threat to our community," as per Daily Mail.

Father Hoeffner, a beloved Catholic priest who celebrated 50 years in the ministry, was remembered for his "compassion and humility."

The Most Reverend John Noonan of the Diocese of Orlando expressed grief, saying, "We will miss his grace-filled presence. We know he and his sister are received by the Lord with mercy and love."

Timeline of Brandon Kapas' shooting

Kapas had a history of arrests dating back to at least 2019, including DUI, drug offenses, and resisting arrest. When police arrived at the scene on Forgal Avenue NE at 2.30 pm on Sunday, were warned by his uncle of Kapas' potentially armed state.

Fleeing toward a stolen car, the 24-year-old managed to break free despite being tasered and shooting two deputies. Additional officers pursued him after two deputies were shot and injured.

They chased Kapas up the street as he fired back at them. Unfortunately, the man's grandfather was caught in the crossfire before the 24-year-old met his demise.

The injured officers are expected to recover, and Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina praised law enforcement's dedication to protecting the community.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families that are experiencing the loss of life of their loved ones," he said. "I am thankful and grateful to Father God our law enforcement officials do not have life-threatening injuries. They continue to exemplify service before self as they serve and protect our families."
