LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Britney Spears has been offered a probation deal in her DUI case and could avoid jail time if she agrees to plead guilty to a lesser reckless driving charge, according to officials.
Prosecutors are expected to push for a resolution that includes probation rather than incarceration, citing the specifics of the case and Spears’ lack of prior DUI record.
Britney Spears offered probation deal in ongoing DUI case
Spears, 44, was arrested in March near her California home and charged with one misdemeanor DUI count for driving under the influence. Officials said there was no crash or injury involved, and her reported alcohol level was low.
Authorities also noted she has no previous DUI record, which is expected to factor into plea discussions. Since the charge is a misdemeanor, Spears is not required to appear in court personally and can be represented by her attorney during proceedings.
In connection with the case, Spears is expected to be required to complete a DUI education program and pay applicable fines and fees. Officials described such outcomes as relatively “common,” particularly when defendants agree to treatment or rehabilitation measures, as per People.
A representative for Spears previously confirmed that the 'Toxic' singer voluntarily entered a treatment facility earlier this month.
Officials said Spears is likely to be offered a “wet reckless” deal, where a defendant pleads guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol and is placed on probation for about one year, often with credit for time already served.
The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office also said Spears may be allowed to accept a lesser charge of reckless driving involving alcohol or drugs, which typically results in probation instead of jail time.
The case was formally filed on April 30. Officials added, “Whether or not Ms Spears will appear at the hearing will be a decision made between her and her attorney.”
Arrest details surface after Britney Spears taken into custody
Spears was arrested in March after police responded to reports of a black BMW being driven at high speed in an unsafe manner. Officers later located the vehicle and detained her after observing signs of impairment, according to the California Highway Patrol.
During the stop, Spears reportedly “showed signs of impairment” and was asked to complete field sobriety tests before being taken into custody. She was released the following morning.

Following the incident, her representative told the BBC, “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in a long-overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life.”
The statement added, “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time. Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well-being."
